Common Dietary Supplements Have Little to No Effect on Mortality
Yet another sizable study has shown that common dietary supplements have little to no effect on late life mortality. This finding of course has to compete with the wall to wall marketing deployed by the supplement market. Researchers have been presenting data on the ineffectiveness of near all supplements of years, but it doesn't seem to reduce the enthusiasm for these products. In the past it was fairly easy to dismiss all supplements as nonsense, or at the very least causing only marginal effects that were in no way comparable to the benefits of exercise and calorie restriction, but matters are now becoming more complex....

We Need A Way Back To Multilateralism In Trade
As trade restrictions mount and as major trading countries remain mired in commercial impasse, an approaching global gathering in Central Asia next summer could prove to be the climax to the current battle between continued multilateral cooperation and increased unilateral confrontation in trade. The World Trade Organization, with its commitment to international cooperation, has been struggling with the headwinds of unilateralism and protectionism. If a way back to multilateralism in trade is not soon found, the entire trading system may unravel, with grievous economic consequences for all the world. So far, the developed co...

Iron deficiency: Causes your doctor won ’ t tell you about
Very commonly, no cause for iron deficiency and iron deficiency anemia are found: no gastrointestinal bleeding, no excessive menstrual blood loss, no hemolysis (red blood cell destruction). Your doctor tells you that there is no identifiable cause and you are therefore resigned to taking iron supplements, prescription iron, injectable iron, or even blood transfusions while the anemia often does not respond or does so only temporarily. Here are two situations in which iron deficiency develops that are rarely addressed by doctors, but YOU can: The phytates of wheat and grains—Modern wheat, in particular, has been se...

Is it SAFE to be grain-free?
Listen to critics of the Wheat Belly lifestyle and you’d think that, by banishing all things wheat and grains from your life, you will be excommunicated from your church, tossed out of your club, ostracized by friends and family, and suffer dire health consequences like heart disease and colon cancer. After all, they say that you are eliminating an entire food group and will be crippled by lack of fiber and nutrients. Worse, our focus on increasing our intake of fats and oils will get you a heart attack, three stents, or bypass surgery and you’ll be obliged to take Lipitor and Repatha for a lifetime. First of a...

Where did all the magnesium go?
We pay special attention to restoration of magnesium in the Wheat Belly lifestyle. This is because magnesium deficiency is universal, affecting virtually everyone, is severe, and has substantial implications for health. But why? Why has everyone become so depleted in magnesium in the modern world? There are five major reasons: Water filtration—We filter our water out of necessity, since modern waterways are contaminated by sewage runoff, pesticide/herbicides, algal overgrowth, etc. So, rather than drinking from a nearby stream or river that runs freely over rocks and minerals rich in magnesium, we drink water filter...

Where, oh where, art thou, Arabinoxylan?
I hate to admit it, but there actually is something good in wheat and grains but it’s not B vitamins, cellulose fiber, or the approving looks of your doctor or dietitian. It’s arabinoxylan, as well as amylose, the prebiotic fibers of wheat/grains that nourish microorganisms in the gastrointestinal tract. It’s ironic that all the fuss about fiber intake that was the big push for bran cereals is not the form of fiber that yields genuine benefits, at least anything beyond bulking up bowel movements. It’s the neglected prebiotic fibers like arabinoxylan that were the source of any health benefits. The a...

150 Years of Boondoggles
Today is the 150th anniversary of the pounding of the gold spike that represented completion of the first transcontinental railroad. Union Pacific, which now owns the complete route, plans to bring its newly restoredBig Boy steam locomotive to Ogden to recreate, with 4-8-4 locomotive 844, the joining of the UP and Central Pacific in 1869. Numerousmuseums andhistory societies are planning exhibits and meetings. While it would be fascinating to watch theBig Boy operate, you ’ll have to excuse me for otherwise being unenthused about this event. As I see it, the first transcontinental railroad was the biggest boondoggle in ni...

Researchers Develop Smart Bioinks to 3D Print Living Tissues
If we’re going to 3D print tissues, organs, and entire body parts, scientists will have to create advanced, highly functional bioinks. Plus, these bioinks will have to withstand being printed and must survive within the harsh interior of the body. At the Fraunhofer Institute for Interfacial Engineering and Biotechnology and University of Stuttgart in Germany, researchers are working on this goal and they’ve already developed a number of liquid bioinks that contain living cells among a mixture of other ingredients. The new bioinks are made of biopolymers, including gelatin and hyaluronic acid, an aqueous medium...
