Measles, tuberculosis, and wheat
Humans have made many dietary mistakes over the years but two mistakes, in particular, stand out: close contact with animals, mostly ruminants, who conveyed their diseases to us and the adoption of the seeds of grasses as human food. These two practices not only changed the course of human history but also human disease. Over the last several centuries, Westerners have populated North America, South America, Pacific islands and other regions. Equipped with superior tools of warfare such as swords and muskets, contact with Westerners decimated indigenous people such as the millions of native Americans, Aztecs, and Amazonian...

Simplified seeding with Seedball
The manufacturers of Seedball sent me a couple of tins of their product to try out and review. It’s an ingenious idea, little pellets of clay and soil packed with lots of different wildflower seeds in each and a little chilli powder to keep the ants away. You scatter a few over your putative seedbeds and wait for the rains…or as I did grab the watering can and sprinkle a few drops of pre-stored rainwater from the waterbutts. These seem like the perfect answer for the wannabe gardener who doesn’t want all the hassle of seed trees and seedlings and pricking out and thinning out and all that malarkey. IR...

Should I be eating more fiber?
You probably know the basics about fiber: it’s the part of plant foods that your body cannot digest, and there are two types — soluble fiber and insoluble fiber. Both types of fiber are good for us. Soluble fiber dissolves in water, forming a gel. It is the form of fiber that helps lower cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of heart disease, and regulate blood sugar levels. Soluble fiber is found in black beans, lima beans, Brussels sprouts, avocado, sweet potato, broccoli, turnips, and pears. Insoluble fiber passes through the digestive system relatively intact, adding bulk to stools. It is the form of fiber that preve...

Planet-friendly, plant-based home cooking
With all the news about the health and environmental advantages of eating less meat, many people are trying to eat more plant-based meals. But where do you begin? Instead of trying to cook an entire vegetarian meal from scratch, start with one small step and build from there, says Dr. Rani Polak, founding director of the Culinary Healthcare Education Fundamentals (CHEF) coaching program at Harvard’s Institute of Lifestyle Medicine. “For example, buy some canned beans. You can then make a simple bean salad with a little olive oil and lemon juice. Or if you have a favorite recipe for beef stew, try swapping in beans for ...

The Modern New Deal That's Too Good to Be True
This morning I responded to leading Modern Monetary Theory (MMT) proponentStephanie Kelton ’sHuffington Post op-ed, “How We Can Pay for a Green New Deal,” with a tweet observing thatMMT often boils down to nothing more than an especially naive sort of Keynesianism: assume an unlimited excess supply of every resource save money balances, and, voila! monetary expansion can costlessly finance all the projects we like!https://t.co/fHi4rpp2Vh # via@HuffPost— George Selgin (@GeorgeSelgin)February 8, 2019My comparison of basic MMT arguments with plain-vanilla Keynesianism is hardly novel: many others have made it, less su...

We are told that we must eat wheat and grains for nutrition. But the OPPOSITE is true: Wheat and grains are responsible for widespread, sometimes severe, nutritional deficiencies. Conventional dietary advice is a collection of fairy tales. But understand this and you are empowered to achieve magnificent health. Transcript: I call this Wheat Belly conversation “There’s Nothing Phunny About Phytates”. Let me tell you what I mean. There’s a compound in grains called phytic acids, or phytates, and these are very powerfully effective binders of any mineral that is positively charged. When it binds up these...

I ’ m grain-free, eat nutrient-dense food – why do I need nutritional supplements?
When you remove wheat and grains from your diet, you remove phytates that block gastrointestinal absorption of magnesium, iron, zinc, calcium, and other positively-charged minerals. You also remove the trigger for autoimmune destruction of stomach parietal cells that produce stomach acid and “intrinsic factor” necessary for vitamin B12 absorption. Wheat/grain elimination therefore preserve the stomach’s capacity to produce hydrochloric acid necessary for digestion and intrinsic factor for effective B12 absorption. So if you banish wheat and grains and thereby increase absorption of nutrients and make a ha...
