Consideration for alpha-gal syndrome in two critically ill persons with group O blood who received group B plasma
CONCLUSION: Two patients with O-positive blood and no known allergies experience danaphyl axis after transfusion with group B FFP. The symptoms cannot definitively be imputed to an allergic transfusion reaction, but the presence of IgE against alpha-gal supports an association. Medicating patients with antihistamines and IV steroids pre-transfusion may prevent allergic reactions. Restricting group B plasma-containing products (plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate) for patients who experience AGS-like symptoms may be considered.PMID:38566573 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17811 (Source: Transfusion)

Healthy Diets and Lifestyles in the World: Mediterranean and Blue Zone People Live Longer. Special Focus on Gut Microbiota and Some Food Components
Endocr Metab Immune Disord Drug Targets. 2024 Apr 2. doi: 10.2174/0118715303271634240319054728. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLongevity has been associated with healthy lifestyles, including some dietary regimens, such as the Mediterranean diet (MedDiet) and the Blue Zone (BZ) diets. MedDiet relies on a large consumption of fruit, vegetables, cereals, and extra-virgin olive oil, with less red meat and fat intake. Four major BZ have been recognized in the world, namely, Ogliastra in Sardinia (Italy), Ikaria (Greece), the Peninsula of Nicoya (Costa Rica), and Okinawa (Japan). Extreme longevity in these areas has been associa...

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 558: Hepatitis E Seroprevalence and Detection of Genotype 3 Strains in Domestic Pigs from Sierra Leone Collected in 2016 and 2017
artin Eiden Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the main cause of acute hepatitis in humans worldwide and is responsible for a large number of outbreaks especially in Africa. Human infections are mainly caused by genotypes 1 and 2 of the genus Paslahepevirus, which are exclusively associated with humans. In contrast, viruses of genotypes 3 and 4 are zoonotic and have their main reservoir in domestic and wild pigs, from which they can be transmitted to humans primarily through the consumption of meat products. Both genotypes 3 and 4 are widespread in Europe, Asia, and North America and lead to sporadic cases of hepatitis E. Howe...

Genes, Vol. 15, Pages 454: Marker Density and Models to Improve the Accuracy of Genomic Selection for Growth and Slaughter Traits in Meat Rabbits
Dan Wang Xinzhong Fan The selection and breeding of good meat rabbit breeds are fundamental to their industrial development, and genomic selection (GS) can employ genomic information to make up for the shortcomings of traditional phenotype-based breeding methods. For the practical implementation of GS in meat rabbit breeding, it is necessary to assess different marker densities and GS models. Here, we obtained low-coverage whole-genome sequencing (lcWGS) data from 1515 meat rabbits (including parent herd and half-sibling offspring). The specific objectives were (1) to derive a baseline for heritability estimates and ...

Productive performance, digestibility, carcass traits and meat quality in rabbits fed triticale-based diets supplemented with xylanase
The objective was to evaluate the effects of the enzyme xylanase included in triticale-based diets on productive performance, digestibility, carcass traits and meat quality in growing-finishing rabbits. Eighty rabbits (New Zealand X California breed), 35 days old, with an average initial live weight of 821  ± 26 g, were used. Twenty animals for treatment were used in each one of the fourth experimental treatments: 0, 4000, 8000 and 12,000 XU/kg of xylanase inclusion (XilaBlend 6X). The rabbits were fed ad libitum and fecal excretion was collected on days 7, 14, 21, 28 and 35 of the experimental period. At the end of ...

Association of dietary patterns with sarcopenia in adults aged 50  years and older
ConclusionA high adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern, characterized by increased consumption of legumes, cereals, fruits, vegetables, and limited amounts of meat, fish, and eggs, is positively associated with handgrip strength and appendicular skeletal muscle mass. The highest adherence to this dietary model is associated with the lowest odds of low muscle strength and sarcopenia. Despite the changes brought about by urbanization in southern Italy compared to the past, our findings continue to affirm the superior benefits of the Mediterranean diet in postponing the onset of frailty among older adults when compar...

Whole-genome resequencing uncovers diversity and selective sweep in Kazakh cattle
Anim Genet. 2024 Apr 1. doi: 10.1111/age.13425. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe Kazakh cattle in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region of China are highly adaptable and have multiple uses, including milk and meat production, and use as draft animals. They are an excellent original breed that could be enhanced by breeding and hybrid improvement. However, the genomic diversity and signature of selection underlying the germplasm characteristics require further elucidation. Herein, we evaluated 26 Kazakh cattle genomes in comparison with 103 genomes of seven other cattle breeds from regions around the world to assess the Kaza...

Dietary quality and dietary greenhouse gas emissions in the USA: a comparison of the planetary health diet index, healthy eating index-2015, and dietary approaches to stop hypertension
CONCLUSIONS: Improved dietary quality has the potential to lower the emissions impacts of US diets. Future efforts to promote healthy, sustainable diets could apply the recommendations of the established DASH guidelines as well as the new guidance provided by the PHDI to increase their environmental benefits.PMID:38566176 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-024-01581-y (Source: Health Physics)
