Post-formation of fused pentagonal structure on fjord region of polyaromatic hydrocarbons under hydrothermal conditions
This study explores the synthesis of cyclopenta-fused polyaromatic hydrocarbons (CP-PAHs) via Pt-catalyzed cyclization in water, focusing on the formation of fused pentagonal rings within heavily fused PAH frameworks. Utilizing platinum catalysts at lower temperatures (200-260°C) in water, led to the successful synthesis of singly cyclized CP-PAHs. The reaction conditions facilitated the mono-cyclization of substrates such as dibenzo[g,p]chrysene and its isomers, yielding the desired products while suppressing the formation of bis-cyclized compounds. The use of Fe2O3 as an additive in conjunction with PtO2 was effective t...

Elastic parameter identification of three-dimensional soft tissue based on deep neural network
J Mech Behav Biomed Mater. 2024 Apr 12;155:106542. doi: 10.1016/j.jmbbm.2024.106542. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the field of virtual surgery and deformation simulation, the identification of elastic parameters of human soft tissues is a critical technology that directly affects the accuracy of deformation simulation. Current research on soft tissue deformation simulation predominantly assumes that the elasticity of tissues is fixed and already known, leading to the difficulty in populating with the elasticity measured or identified from specific tissues of real patients. Existing elasticity modeling efforts struggle ...

Biological, physical and morphological factors for the programming of a novel microbial hygromorphic material
This study spans many fields including microbiology, materials science, design, fabrication and architectural technology, working at multiple scales from single cells to ‘bench-top’ prototype. Exploration of biological factors at cellular and ultracellular levels enabled optimisation of growth and sporulation conditions to biologically preprogramme optimum spore hygromorphic response and yield. Material explorations revealed physical factors influencing biomecha nics, preprogramming shape and response complexity through fabrication and inert substrate interactions, to produce a palette of HBCs. Morphological aggregatio...

Recent advances in the synthesis of single-stranded DNA in vitro
Biotechnol J. 2024 Apr;19(4):e2400026. doi: 10.1002/biot.202400026.ABSTRACTSingle-stranded DNA (ssDNA) is the foundation of modern biology, with wide applications in gene editing, sequencing, DNA information storage, and materials science. However, synthesizing ssDNA with high efficiency, high throughput, and low error rate in vitro remains a major challenge. Various methods have been developed for ssDNA synthesis, and some significant results have been achieved. In this review, six main methods were introduced, including solid-phase oligonucleotide synthesis, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-based ssDNA synthesis, re...

The orientation of CpG conjugation on aluminum oxyhydroxide nanoparticles determines the immunostimulatory effects of combination adjuvants
Biomaterials. 2024 Apr 11;308:122569. doi: 10.1016/j.biomaterials.2024.122569. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn subunit vaccines, aluminum salts (Alum) are commonly used as adjuvants, but with limited cellular immune responses. To overcome this limitation, CpG oligodeoxynucleotides (ODNs) have been used in combination with Alum. However, current combined usage of Alum and CpG is limited to linear mixtures, and the underlying interaction mechanism between CpG and Alum is not well understood. Thus, we propose to chemically conjugate Alum nanoparticles and CpG (with 5' or 3' end exposed) to design combination adjuvants. Our s...

Chemistry. 2024 Apr 16:e202401091. doi: 10.1002/chem.202401091. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChiral metal-organic framework (CMOFs) is a kind of material with great application value in recent years. Formed by the coordination of metal ions or metal clusters with organic ligands. It is widely used in chemistry, biology, medicine and materials science because of its ordered and adjustable pores, multi-dimensional network structure, large specific surface area and excellent adsorption properties. In this paper, the synthesis strategies and preparation methods of chiral metal-organic frameworks are reviewed. In addition, the...
