Elderly vs. Working-Age Generation: Homeownership and Housing Asset Inequality in a Cross-Country Perspective
This study contributes to the discussion about wealth inequality, albeit from a more detailed housing perspective. It explores tenure inequality, as well as housing assets inequality. The latter includes a different approach than the one that prevails in the previous literature on wealth inequalities, which most often considers total net worth or net housing wealth. This study focuses on gross housing asset distribution, irrespective of mortgage debt, which corresponds with the potential of housing equity accumulation as a source of income in old age. It emphasises the intergenerational context, but simultaneously involves...

A standardised protocol for relative SARS-CoV-2 variant severity assessment, applied to Omicron BA.1 and Delta in six European countries, October 2021 to February 2022
In conclusion, this study demonstrates the feasibility of conducting variant severity analyses in a multinational collaborative framework and adds evidence for the reduced severity of the Omicron BA.1 variant.PMID:37676146 | DOI:10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2023.28.36.2300048 (Source: Euro Surveill)

Stent-frame decoupling following self-expandable transcatheter aortic valve replacement
In 2009, Shultz et  al.1 analysed multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) scans of 30 patients following first-generation CoreValve (CRS, Medtronic, Luxembourg) implantation and demonstrated that incomplete and non-uniform expansion of the transcatheter aortic valve (THV) stent frame could be observed at all prosthe sis levels. However, they also found a high level of eccentricity in the left ventricle outflow tract (LVOT) and native annulus, and less deformity in the middle and higher THV segments. Douglas-fir plantations impact stream and groundwater chemistry in western Europe: Insights from three case studies in France and Luxembourg
This study also shows that nitrate concentrations in surface and ground waters in rural areas could also originate from Douglas fir forested catchments. The impact of Douglas-fir is nevertheless reduced downstream through a dilution effect: mixing tree species at the catchment scale could thus be a solution to mitigate the effect of Douglas-fir on nitrate concentration in surface waters.PMID:37652225 | DOI:10.1016/j.envpol.2023.122477 (Source: Environmental Pollution)

Ten-Year Changes in the Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors of Adults: An Analysis of the 2 Cross-Sectional Observation of Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Luxembourg Studies
CONCLUSIONS: Over a 10-year period, PA increased and total sitting time decreased in adults living in Luxembourg. With regard to specific sedentary behaviors, television viewing, and PC use outside of work increased. Specific population subgroups will benefit the most from targeted efforts to increase PA and minimize sedentary behavior.PMID:37604484 | DOI:10.1123/jpah.2022-0611 (Source: Health Physics)

Protocol for a multicentre cross-sectional, longitudinal ambulatory clinical trial in rheumatoid arthritis and Parkinsons disease patients analysing the relation between the gut microbiome, fasting and immune status in Germany (ExpoBiome)
Introduction Chronic inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease (PD) have recently been associated with a decreased diversity in the gut microbiome, emerging as key driver of various diseases. The specific interactions between gut-borne microorganisms and host pathophysiology remain largely unclear. The microbiome can be modulated by interventions comprising nutrition. The aim of our clinical study is to (1) examine effects of prolonged fasting (PF) and time-restricted eating (TRE) on the outcome parameters and the immunophenotypes of RA and PD with (...

5000-year-old ‘Iceman’ had dark skin and a receding hairline
Since his discovery 3 decades ago, nearly every inch of Ötzi the Iceman’s 150-centimeter-tall, 5300-year-old body has been scrutinized: his last meal (a feast of fatty ibex) , his dental habits (bad, lots of cavities) , and his many wounds (a paleo–murder mystery) . Visitors to the Italian museum where his mummified remains are housed can also meet his reconstruction, a light-skinned man sporting luscious brown locks. But according to a new DNA analysis published today in Cell Genomics , the Iceman himself wouldn’t recognize the figure: Ötzi’s genes reveal ...

The role of economic freedom in achieving the environmental sustainability for the highest economic freedom countries: testing the environmental Kuznets curve hypothesis
Environ Sci Pollut Res Int. 2023 Aug 12. doi: 10.1007/s11356-023-29120-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn the study, the relationship between ecological footprint, economic freedom, renewable energy consumption, and economic growth is analysed under the scope of environmental Kuznets curve (EKC) hypothesis. Here, fifteen countries with the highest economic freedom for the period 1996-2018 are selected to more clearly underline the impact of economic freedom on the environment and examined, i.e., Australia, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Germany, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Singapore, South Kore...
