Device-measured physical activity and sedentary time in a national sample of Luxembourg residents: the ORISCAV-LUX 2 study
CONCLUSIONS: Adherence to recommended PA is high in Luxembourg, but half of daily time is spent sedentary. Specific population subgroups will benefit from targeted efforts to replace sedentary time with PA.PMID:36581944 | DOI:10.1186/s12966-022-01380-3 (Source: Health Physics)

Environmental tobacco smoke at home and in public places prior to smoking ban enforcement: assessment by hair analysis in a population of young adult students
This study investigated determinants of ETS in a population of young adult students, considered at higher risk of exposure due to their specific lifestyle. This cross-sectional study involved 90 students aged 20 ±1.7years, from the University of Luxembourg, prior to the smoking ban enforcement in public places in the country. Participants reported their tobacco consumption and exposure to ETS at home and/or in public places, and provided a hair sample analyzed for nicotine and cotinine. Nicotine and cotini ne were significantly higher in smokers than in non-smokers’ hair in general (median: 2.6 vs 0.9ng/mg and 87.1 vs 2...

Spanish regulation of euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide
In March 2021, the Spanish Congress approved the law regulating euthanasia, that regulates both euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide (PAS). In this article, we analyse the Spanish law regulating euthanasia and PAS, comparing it with the rest of the European laws on euthanasia and PAS (Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg). Identified strengths of the Spanish law, with respect to other norms, are that it is a law with many safeguards, which broadly recognises professionals’ right to conscientious objection and the specification that it makes on the prior comprehensive care of the patient, including the approach to...

The Persistence of the Gender Earnings Gap: Cohort Trends and the Role of Education in Twelve Countries
AbstractStudying twelve countries over 30  years, we examine whether women’s educational expansion has translated into a narrowing of the gender gap in earnings when including persons with zero earnings. As educational attainment is cohort-dependent, an Age-Period-Cohort analysis is most appropriate in our view. Using the micro data from the Luxembourg Income Study (LIS) Database, we show that while, in terms of attainment of tertiary education, women have caught up and often even outperform men, substantial gender differences in our earnings measure persist in all countries. Using the Blinder-Oaxaca decomposition metho...

Screening for familial hypercholesterolaemia in primary school children: protocol for a cross-sectional, feasibility study in Luxembourg city (EARLIE)
Introduction Familial hypercholesterolaemia (FH) is a frequent (1:300) autosomal dominantly inherited condition which causes premature (women <60 years, men <55 years) cardio–cerebrovascular disease (CVD). Early detection and initiation of treatment can prevent the development of CVD and premature death. Our pilot study aims to investigate the prevalence of FH, the feasibility and efficacy of a screening based on a capillary blood test performed during a school medicine visit in primary school children. Methods and analysis In this cross-sectional study, all children (n=3200) between 7 and 12 years, attending ...

HPR210 Future BeNeLuxA Success – A Partnership vs a Prescription Model
Since 2015 there has been substantial growth in multi-country collaborations across Europe, driven by the increasing number of expensive high-innovative drugs with medical need. By joining together, countries increase efficiency of their health technology assessment (HTA) processes to achieve greater bargaining power during price negotiations and ensure patients have timely access to affordable medications. BeNeLuxA brings together Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Luxembourg and The Netherlands, with a combined total population of 43 million. (Source: Value in Health)

IJERPH, Vol. 19, Pages 16018: Long COVID Classification: Findings from a Clustering Analysis in the Predi-COVID Cohort Study
Guy Fagherazzi The increasing number of people living with Long COVID requires the development of more personalized care; currently, limited treatment options and rehabilitation programs adapted to the variety of Long COVID presentations are available. Our objective was to design an easy-to-use Long COVID classification to help stratify people with Long COVID. Individual characteristics and a detailed set of 62 self-reported persisting symptoms together with quality of life indexes 12 months after initial COVID-19 infection were collected in a cohort of SARS-CoV-2 infected people in Luxembourg. A hierarchical ascendan...

Cadmium exposure in adults across Europe: Results from the HBM4EU Aligned Studies survey 2014-2020
The objectives of the study were to estimate the current exposure to cadmium (Cd) in Europe, potential differences between the countries and geographic regions, determinants of exposure and to derive European exposure levels. The basis for this work was provided by the European Human Biomonitoring Initiative (HBM4EU) which established a framework for alignment of national or regional HBM studies. For the purpose of Cd exposure assessment, studies from 9 European countries (Iceland, Denmark, Poland, Czech Republic, Croatia, Portugal, Germany, France, Luxembourg) were included and urine of 20-39 years old adults sampled in t...
