Thyroid research: stepping forward
Abstract It is eight years since Thyroid Research was launched with an aim to enhance opportunities for scientists and clinicians, working in the rapidly advancing field of thyroidology, to publish their research (Thyroid Res 1(1):1, 2008). Right from the outset, Thyroid Research aspired to become a prominent journal in thyroidology with high quality publications. Over the years, the journal has not only survived in the increasingly competitive field of open-access academic journal publication, it has also been making a steady progress towards achieving this ambitious goal. Now, Thyroid Research is read...

Association between iron status and thyroid function in Nepalese children
Conclusions Thyroid dysfunction, iron deficiency and anemia are common among Nepalese children. In this cohort, anemic and iron deficient children had poor thyroid function. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Pendulum swings from hypo- to hyperthyroidism: thyrotoxicosis after severe hypothyroidism following neck irradiation in a patient with a history of Hodgkin’s lymphoma
Conclusions We suspect that a gradual switch from thyroid-blocking to thyroid-stimulating antibodies resulted in development of an overt thyrotoxicosis, possibly with a contributory effect of neck irradiation on her autoimmune status. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Iodine prophylaxis in pregnant women in Poland - where we are? (update 2015)
Abstract Introduction of the model of iodine prophylaxis based on the consumption of iodized salt in 1997 has eliminated the iodine deficiency in Poland. However, in accordance with the current recommendations, all women who are planning to be pregnant or are pregnant or breastfeeding should receive an additional dose of iodine at 150–200 mcg / day because of the increased body's need for iodine during this period. Studies show that only part of women in Poland conduct a proper iodine prophylaxis and it is often initiated in the second and third trimester of pregnancy. The authors try to analyze the p...

A single bolus of high dose levothyroxine (L-T 4 ) as a test in cases of suspected poor compliance to L-T4 therapy
Conclusions Our data support the efficacy, as well as safety of administration of single bolus of high dose L-T4 as a test for possible compliance/adherence problems. (Source: Thyroid Research)

A systematic review and meta-analysis of Harmonic Focus in thyroidectomy compared to conventional techniques
Conclusion This is the first meta-analysis of Harmonic Focus in thyroid surgery. In agreement with meta-analyses previously performed on ultrasonic devices, use of the Harmonic Focus has been shown to be a more effective surgical procedure compared to conventional methods in thyroidectomy. The low occurrence of hypocalcemia and recurrent laryngeal nerve paresis confirms that Harmonic Focus can improve thyroidectomy efficiency without increasing the risk of complications. The impact of Lithium on thyroid function in Chinese psychiatric population
Conclusions Use of depot and avoidance of Valproate or antidepressant should be taken into account before starting patient on Lithium treatment. Thyroxine replacement should be considered when Lithium associated SCH was identified. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Apoptosis induction by combination of drugs or a conjugated molecule associating non-steroidal anti-inflammatory and nitric oxide donor effects in medullary thyroid cancer models: implication of the tumor suppressor p73
Conclusion Association of NO with NSAID exhibited amplified anti-tumoral effects on in vitro and in vivo MTC models by inducing p73-dependent apoptotic cell death. (Source: Thyroid Research)

The value of thyroperoxidase as a prognostic factor for differentiated thyroid cancer -- a long-term follow-up study
Conclusions TPO may be useful in confirming or ruling out benign diseases from differentiated thyroid carcinoma, with the exception of low-risk carcinoma such as MIFC. It could be used as a prognostic factor for differentiated thyroid cancer and patient follow-up, together with other markers. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Circulating thyrotropin receptor messenger ribonucleic acid is not an effective marker in the follow-up of differentiated thyroid carcinoma
Conclusions This study demonstrated that TSHR mRNA assay has good sensitivity in TgAb-positive patients but it is neither specific enough as a first-line of testing nor a surrogate marker in the follow-up of our DTC patients. (Source: Thyroid Research)

The ratio of serum free triiodothyronine to free thyroxine in children: a retrospective database survey of healthy short individuals and patients with severe thyroid hypoplasia or central hypothyroidism
Conclusions The FT3/FT4 ratio appears to be constant between the ages of 3–17 y. Children on L-T4 due to congenital thyroid a/hypoplasia or central hypothyroidism have a decreased FT3/FT4 ratio compared to short normal children. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Thyroid hormones and functional outcomes after ischemic stroke
Conclusions This study found that lower levels of free T3 were associated with poorer outcomes at hospital discharge, and at 3 and 12 months post stroke, however, these associations diminished after correction for other known predictors of stroke outcome. Thyroid hormones have a complex relationship with ischemic stroke and stroke recovery, which merits further larger investigations. (Source: Thyroid Research)
