Impact of thyroid hormone treatment on maternal pregnancy outcomes in women with subclinical hypothyroidism without TPOAb: a retrospective cross-sectional study
ConclusionPregnant women with untreated SCH and without TPOAb positivity had a higher prevalence of pre-eclampsia and GDM compared with euthyroid women, while this was not the case in women with treated SCH, even when it was initiated after the first trimester. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Correlation of the ultrasound thyroid imaging reporting and data system with cytology findings among patients in Uganda
ConclusionWe found that ACR TI-RADS classification is an appropriate and noninvasive method for assessing thyroid nodules in routine practice. It can safely reduce the number of unnecessary fine-needle aspiration in a  significant proportion of benign thyroid lesions. Thyroid nodules classified as TI-RADS 3 should be followed routinely. ACR TI-RADS should be standardized as the screening tool in resource-limited areas. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Severity of hypothyroidism is inversely associated with impaired quality of life in patients referred to an endocrine clinic
ConclusionPatients referred to an endocrine clinic with mild hypothyroidism had an impaired HRQL, compared to patients with more severe hypothyroidism. The most likely explanation of this finding is a lower threshold for seeking medical consultation and secondary care referral if HRQL is deteriorated. The dynamics in plasma FT3I following treatment may be more sensitive for such a discrimination in HRQL than a stratification according to the thyroid function tests at diagnosis. Ultrasound characteristics of follicular and parafollicular thyroid neoplasms: diagnostic performance of artificial neural network
ConclusionsOur data indicate that some MTCs, PTCs, FTCs, and FTAs have distinctive sonographic characteristics. However, a significant overlap of these characteristics may impede an explicit classification. Further prospective investigations involving larger patient and nodule numbers and multicenter access should be pursued to determine if neural networks of this sort are beneficial, helping to classify neoplasms of the thyroid gland. Clinicopathological profile and management of thyroid carcinoma: a Sub-Saharan country experience
ConclusionThyroid cancer is more prevalent among women and most patients present at later stages. The dominance of follicular type suggests that the majority of this population is iodine-deficient. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Changes in brain structure in subjects with resistance to thyroid hormone due to THRB mutations
ConclusionRTHb patients exhibited structural changes in multiple brain areas. Whether these structural changes are causally linked to the abnormal behavioral profile of RTH ß which is similar to ADHD, remains to be determined. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Sonographic changes in the thyroid gland after sclerotherapy with doxycycline can be mistaken for thyroid cancer
ConclusionsFor the work-up of a solitary suspicious thyroid lesion, the medical history of the patient should always be considered. In case of prior ipsilateral sclerotherapy, a reactive inflammatory response may mimic thyroid malignancy. A fine needle aspiration should be performed to exclude thyroid cancer. Treatment is not necessary; the process appears to be self-limiting as evidenced in the follow-up of this case. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Challenges in the care of patients with RET-altered thyroid cancer: a multicountry mixed-methods study
ConclusionThis study describes concrete educational needs for providers involved in the care of patients with RET-altered thyroid carcinomas. Findings can be used to inform the design of evidence-based education and performance improvement interventions in the field and support integration into practice of newly approved RET-selective inhibitors. Histopathological features of asymmetric lacrimal gland enlargement in patients with thyroid eye disease
ConclusionAsymmetrical lacrimal gland enlargement can occur as part of the TED spectrum but may require biopsy to exclude alternate pathology. Histology demonstrates a non-specific lymphocytic infiltrate. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Collision tumor of a papillary and follicular thyroid  carcinoma: a case report
ConclusionsA case of a collision tumor of PTC and FTC is very rare, and even fewer cases have been subjected to genetic scrutiny. The present case was successfully diagnosed by pathological examination using immunohistochemical and genetic analyses. The TERT promoter mutation in the PTC lesion was consistent with the aggressive behavior of the cancer. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Macular microvasculature in patients with thyroid-associated orbitopathy: a cross-sectional study
ConclusionWe showed that the FAZ area is larger in active TAO patients and can be considered a possible candidate feature for monitoring disease activity and thyroid-associated vasculopathy. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Recurrent laryngeal nerve ’s course running anteriorly to a thyroid tumor
We report a rare case with the RLN running anteriorly to a thyroid tumor. A 56-year-old Japanese woman underwent a thyroidectomy for a benign thyroid tumor. Preoperatively, computed tomography confirmed that part of the tumor had extended into the mediastinum and was descending posteriorly up to the brachiocephalic artery. Intraoperatively, when the sternothyroid muscle was incised to expose the thyroid gland, a cord (nerve)-like structure was observed directly anterior to the thyroid tumor. Although the course of this cord-like structure was clearly different from the"traditional" course of the right RLN, the po...

The clinical significance of low dose biotin supplements ( & lt;300 μg/day) in the treatment of patients with hypothyroidism: crucial or overestimated?
ConclusionOur study suggests that changes in thyroid hormones profiling, due to supplements containing low dose biotin, are of minimal clinical relevance and in most cases don ’t occult the need to adjust the thyroxine replacement dose in patients with hypothyroidism. Larger, well-designed trials are required to further evaluate this phenomenon. (Source: Thyroid Research)

Decrease of thyroid function after ischemic stroke is related to stroke severity
ConclusionThere is a transient decrease of thyroid hormones after ischemic stroke, possibly driven by stroke severity. Larger studies are needed to validate these findings. Correction of thyroid function in acute stroke may be investigated to improve stroke outcomes. (Source: Thyroid Research)
