Hepatocellular Injury in Children Treated for Rifampicin-resistant Tuberculosis: Incidence, Etiology and Outcome
Background:
Hepatocellular injury has been reported commonly in adults on rifampicin-resistant and multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (RR/MDR-TB) treatment. However, there are limited data in children.
Methods:
Two pharmacokinetic studies of children (0–17 years) routinely treated for RR/MDR-TB were conducted in Cape Town, South Africa between October 2011 and February 2020. Hepatocellular injury adverse events (AEs; defined as elevated alanine aminotransferase [ALT]) were documented serially. Data were analyzed to determine the incidence, etiology, risk factors, management and outcome of ALT elevation.

Outpatient Antibiotic Prescribing for 357,390 Children With Otitis Media
This study aimed to evaluate antibiotic prescriptions for children with otitis media (OM) in a large nationwide network of private clinics between 2014 and 2020. Special focus was paid to amoxicillin and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid prescriptions, which the national guidelines recommend for first-line drugs. We also focused on macrolides, which are commonly prescribed for respiratory tract infections in children but are not appropriate for OM cases.
Methods:
The data were obtained from the electronic health records of about 250,000 annual visits in (Source: The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal)

Invasive Streptococcus Gallolyticus Infections in Infants At Texas Children’s Hospital: A 9-Year Retrospective Review
We describe the clinical course and treatment of 15 infants with bacteremia and/or meningitis due to S. gallolyticus. Outcomes were favorable with limited neuroimaging findings. One-third of isolates displayed reduced susceptibility to penicillin highlighting the importance of performing antimicrobial susceptibility testing in infants with meningitis.
