Radiotherapy for benign diseases in Turkey: a patterns of care survey of the Turkish Society for Radiation Oncology (TROD 05-002)
ConclusionThe ratio of patients who underwent RT for benign diseases in Turkey among all patients who underwent RT was 4.85%. Intraoperative radiotherapy (IORT) of early breast cancer with low-energy x-rays in breast-conserving surgery
ConclusionWe observed that preoperative ultrasound-based tumor –skin distance is a significant factor in addition to already known parameters to predict feasibility of IORT. Based on our findings we developed a formula to optimize IORT planning which might serve as an additional tool to improve patient selection for IORT in early breast cancer. ConclusionIdentification of patients at an increased risk of RD and subsequent implementation of adequate preventive measures remain relevant and challenging aspects of clinical routines. Consensus exists on several risk factors and nonpharmaceutical prevention recommendations, while RT-dependent risk factors, e.g., the fractionation scheme, or hygienic measures like deodorant use remain controversial. ConclusionsIn our cohort of patients treated with radio(chemo)therapy for laryngeal cancer, we found good therapeutic results and an acceptable side-effect profile. Statistically significant predictors of overall survival were the baseline PS, weight loss, anaemia, associated comorbidities, history of alcohol abuse and marital status. Irradiation dose to the swallowing apparatus impacts nutritional status in head and neck cancer patients —results from the prospective randomized HEADNUT trial
ConclusionEstablishment of a normal nutritional status before the start of RT and adherence to dose constraints for the swallowing apparatus may prevent malnutrition in head and neck cancer patients at the end of therapy.
