Novel in-house knowledge-based automated planning system for lung cancer treated with intensity-modulated radiotherapy
ConclusionsOur results showed that αDiar was an effective tool to improve planning quality. Over half of the patients’ plans could be designed automatically. For the remaining patients, although the automatically designed plans did not fully meet the clinical requirements, their quality was also better than that of manual plans. Major complications after intraoperative radiotherapy with low-energy x-rays in early breast cancer
ConclusionIORT is an efficient and safe treatment method as<  2.5% of all IORT patients experienced major local complications. However, it seems to pose the risk of causing severe local complications that may require lengthy and burdensome treatment. Thorough preoperative counseling, implementation of recommended intraoperative precautions, and high vigilan ce for first symptoms of complications during follow-up appointments are necessary measures. Impact of magnetic resonance imaging-related geometric distortion of dose distribution in fractionated stereotactic radiotherapy in patients with brain metastases
ConclusionUse of a  distortion-correction algorithm in the studied MR diagnoses is essential, and the dosimetric impact of MR distortion is not negligible, particularly for tumors located far away from the MIC. (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

Irradiation dose to the swallowing apparatus impacts nutritional status in head and neck cancer patients —results from the prospective randomized HEADNUT trial
ConclusionEstablishment of a  normal nutritional status before the start of RT and adherence to dose constraints for the swallowing apparatus may prevent malnutrition in head and neck cancer patients at the end of therapy. Specifically, we suggest an icm V40Gy (%) of more than 86% to be predictive for nutritional complications . (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

Dual-tracer PET/CT protocol with [18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 outperforms single-tracer PET/CT with [18F]FDG in different cancer types, resulting in larger functional and gross tumor volume
ConclusionDual-tracer PET/CT with [18F]FDG and [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 showed better visualization due to a  generally higher TBR and larger FTV and GTV compared to [18F]FDG-PET/CT in several tumor entities, suggesting that [68Ga]Ga-FAPI-46 provides added value in pretherapeutic staging. Low-dose radiotherapy for greater trochanteric pain syndrome —a single-centre analysis
ConclusionLDRT is an effective treatment for GTPS. Administration of two LDRT series, prior response to SI, and absence of structural abnormalities may predict significantly better treatment outcomes. (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

Utility of pre-chemoradiotherapy Pan-Immune-Inflammation-Value for predicting the osteoradionecrosis rates in locally advanced nasopharyngeal cancers
ConclusionsOur findings revealed a  strong link between aggravated inflammatory response and ORN genesis, with high pretreatment PIV levels related to significantly higher ORN rates. (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

Impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on training conditions and education in oncologic disciplines: a  survey-based analysis
ConclusionIn order to improve oncology training in times of crisis, access to digital training options and meetings should be ensured. Participants wish for regular team meetings in person to enable good team spirit, compensation for overtime work and sufficient time for training supervisors for discussion and feedback. Prospective randomized clinical studies involving reirradiation: update of a  systematic review
ConclusionMulticentric randomized trials on reirradiation are feasible and continue to refine the current standard of care for recurrent disease after previous radiotherapy. Ongoing prospective studies such as the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology and European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer (ESTRO-EORTC) observational cohort ReCare (NCT: NCT03818503) will further shape the clinical practice of reirradiation. Co-occurrence of acrocentric chromosome associations with dicentric chromosomes in irradiated human lymphocytes
ConclusionThe present analysis showed increasing ACA complexity with increasing radiation dose. Furthermore, a  higher frequency of ACA in cells with 1DC or ≥ 2DC compared to the ACA in cells without DC from the same sample of irradiated lymphocytes demonstrated the co-occurrence of ACA and DC in the same cells. Survey on brachytherapy training among radiation oncology residents in the German-speaking regions of Europe
ConclusionThe interest in brachytherapy training among residents in German-speaking countries was generally high, but there is a perceived lack of sufficient case volumes and partially also in formal training opportunities. Fellowships at departments with a high case load as part of a formalised curriculum and dedicated hands-on workshops at national or international conferences might help to overcome these issues. The evolving role of reduced-dose total skin electron beam therapy in skin malignancies: the renaissance of a  rare indication
AbstractDefinitive radiation therapy is an effective local treatment for several cutaneous malignancies. Patients with diffuse or generalized skin manifestations might require total skin electron beam therapy (TSEBT) as an alternative treatment to the chasing technique. In this short communication, we highlight the evolving role of TSEBT and present its role in various forms of skin malignancies. (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)
