Survey in radiation oncology departments in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland: state of digitalization by 2023
ConclusionTo the best of our knowledge, this survey is the first of its kind conducted in German-speaking radiation oncology departments within the medical field. The findings suggest that there is a  varied level of digitalization implementation within these departments, with certain areas exhibiting lower rates of digitalization that could benefit from targeted improvement initiatives. Low-dose radiotherapy of osteoarthritis: from biological findings to clinical effects —challenges for future studies
AbstractOsteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common and socioeconomically relevant diseases, with rising incidence and prevalence especially with regard to an ageing population in the Western world. Over the decades, the scientific perception of OA has shifted from a  simple degeneration of cartilage and bone to a multifactorial disease involving various cell types and immunomodulatory factors. Despite a wide range of conventional treatment modalities available, a significant proportion of patients remain treatment refractory. Low-dose radiotherapy (LDRT) ha s been used for decades in the treatment of patients with i...

Chronic inflammatory effects of in vivo irradiation of the murine heart on endothelial cells mimic mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis
ConclusionThe long-lasting upregulation of prominent inflammatory markers on primary heart and lung ECs suggests that local heart irradiation induces chronic inflammation in the microvasculature of the heart and partially irradiated lung that leads to cardiac injury which might be related to altered lipid metabolism in the heart. Advances in molecular targeted therapies to increase efficacy of (chemo)radiation therapy
AbstractRecent advances in understanding the tumor ’s biology in line with a constantly growing number of innovative technologies have prompted characterization of patients’ individual malignancies and may display a prerequisite to treat cancer at its patient individual tumor vulnerability. In recent decades, radiation- induced signaling and tum or promoting local events for radiation sensitization were explored in detail, resulting the development of novel molecular targets. A multitude of pharmacological, genetic, and immunological principles, including small molecule- and antibody-based targeted strategies, have be...

High-LET charged particles: radiobiology and application for new approaches in radiotherapy
AbstractThe number of patients treated with charged-particle radiotherapy as well as the number of treatment centers is increasing worldwide, particularly regarding protons. However, high-linear energy transfer (LET) particles, mainly carbon ions, are of special interest for application in radiotherapy, as their special physical features result in high precision and hence lower toxicity, and at the same time in increased efficiency in cell inactivation in the target region, i.e., the tumor. The radiobiology of high-LET particles differs with respect to DNA damage repair, cytogenetic damage, and cell death type, and their i...

Effect of lethal total body irradiation on bone marrow chimerism, acute graft-versus-host disease, and tumor engraftment in mouse models: impact of different radiation techniques using low- and high-energy X-rays
ConclusionDifferent X ‑ray irradiation modalities condition T cell alloreactivity in experimental semi-allogeneic BMT. Low-energy X‑ray irradiator induces a post-TBI inflammatory burst and exacerbates alloreactive reactions. This technical and biological information should be considered in interpreting GVHD/ graft- versus-leukemia effect results in mice experimental models of BMT. (Source: Strahlentherapie und Onkologie)

DNA as the main target in radiotherapy —a historical overview from first isolation to anti-tumour immune response
AbstractDNA damage is one of the foremost mechanisms of irradiation at the biological level. After the first isolation of DNA by Friedrich Miescher in the 19th century, the structure of DNA was described by Watson and Crick. Several Nobel Prizes have been awarded for DNA-related discoveries. This review aims to describe the historical perspective of DNA in radiation biology. Over the decades, DNA damage has been identified and quantified after irradiation. Depending on the type of sensing, different proteins are involved in sensing DNA damage and repairing the damage, if possible. For double-strand breaks, the main repair ...

Safety and efficacy of helical tomotherapy following lung-sparing surgery in locally advanced malignant pleural mesothelioma
ConclusionIMHT of locally advanced MPM after lung-sparing surgery is safe and feasible, resulting in satisfactory local control and survival. Adjuvant chemotherapy significantly improves OS. Randomized clinical trials incorporating modern RT techniques as a  component of trimodal treatment are warranted to establish an evidence-based standard of care pattern for locally advanced MPM.
