Measurement of erythrocyte lifespan using a CO breath test in patients with thalassemia and the impact of treatment
Background:Thalassemia comprises a diverse group of genetic disorders that affects the synthesis of globin chains, with a global distribution. The use of erythrocyte lifespan (ELS) to assess differences among patients with different types of thalassemia and the efficacy of splenectomy has not been implemented. Bone marrow microenvironment involvement in t-mn: focus on mesenchymal stem cells
Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MN) are a late complication of cytotoxic therapy (CT) used in the treatment of both malignant and non-malignant diseases. Historically, t-MN has been considered to be a direct consequence of DNA damage induced in normal hematopoietic stem or progenitor cells (HSPC) by CT. However, we now know that treatment-induced mutations in HSC are not the only players involved in t-MN development but additional factors may contribute to the onset of t-MN.One of the known drivers involved in this field is the bone marrow microenvironment (BMM) and in particular bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BM...

Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms: considerations for patients ’ clinical evaluation.
Therapy-related myeloid neoplasms (t-MNs) encompass a specific sub-group of myeloid malignancies arising after exposure to radio/cytotoxic agents for the treatment of unrelated diseases.Such malignancies present unique features, including advanced age, high comorbidities burden, and unfavorable genetic profiles. All these features justify the need for a specific diagnostic work-up and dedicated treatment algorithms. However, as new classification systems recognize the unique clinical characteristics exhibited by t-MNs patients, how to assess fitness status in this clinical setting is largely unexplored. Optimizing fitness ...

A rare case of multidrug resistant Leclercia adecarboxylata catheter-related bloodstream infection and an updated brief literature review
Leclercia adecarboxylatais a gram-negative bacillus, a ubiquitous microorganism, which may be found in both aquatic environments and soil, it was first described by H. Leclerc in 1962 and was reclassified thanks to more sensitive testing methods.L. adecarboxylata has been recently recognized as an emerging pathogen that causes several clinical syndromes not only in immunocompromised patients. Correlation of transient elastography with liver iron concentration, and serum ferritin levels in patients with transfusion-dependent thalassemia major patients from oman
Conclusion: We observed that in transfusion dependent β thalassemia major patients there was a significant correlation with the TE measured by ultrasound transient elastography, and LIC by MRI as well as SF levels but not with the fibrosis-4 (FIB-4) score. Key Words: Serum ferritin; Fibrosis-4; Transfusion-dependent beta-thalassemia; Transient elastography; Magnetic resonance imaging (Source: Mediterranean Journal of Hematology and Infectious Diseases)
