Principles of clinical ethics and their application to practice
An overview of ethics and clinical ethics is given. The 4 main ethical principles- beneficence, nonmaleficance, autonomy and justice- are defined and explained. Informed consent, truth-telling and confidentiality spring from the principle of autonomy and each of them is discussed. In patient care situations, not infrequently, there are conflicts between ethical principles (especially between beneficence and autonomy). A four-pronged systematic approach to ethical problem-solving and illustrative cases of conflicts are presented. Comments following the cases clarify the resolution of these conflicts. A model for patient car...

< b > < i > ACTN3 < /i > < /b > ’s R577X Single Nucleotide Polymorphism Allele Distribution Differs Significantly in Professional Football Players according to Their Field Position
Conclusions: Genetic biomarkers may be important when analysing performance capability in elite professional football. Identifying the genetic characteristics of a player to adapt his playing position may lead to orientation of positions based on physical capabilities and tissue quality in young football players, and also to performance enhancement in those who are already playing in professional teams. How to reduce the potential harmful effects of light on blastocyst development during IVF
Purpose: Earlier findings revealed the damaging effect of visible light on zygotes and gametes. The aim of our study is to eliminate or significantly reduce the potential harmful effect of light exposure during in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and to investigate the effect of light protection on embryo development and implantation. Materials/methods: To protect sperm cells, oocytes and embryos from the potential harmful effects of light exposure during laboratory procedures, we created a dark environment for the cells and applied red filters on laboratory lamps and UV or infrared filt...

Beta thalassemia minor patients: not tired, but depressed and anxious
We aimed to investigate whether the severity of fatigue and the incidences of depression and anxiety of patients with beta thalassemia minor (BTm) are different than healthy individuals using Fatigue Severity Scale (FSS) and Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) BTm patients who were followed in University of Health Sciences Istanbul Training and Research Hospital Hematology Clinic between 2016 and 2017, who had normal biochemical parameters, thyroid function tests and C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, and didn ’t use any medications, consume alcohol or tobacco, have any chronic diseases or sleep disturbances were ...

Prevalence of asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis based on coronary computed tomography angiography in adults with erectile dysfunction: a cross-sectional study
Objectives: To investigate the prevalence of asymptomatic coronary artery stenosis (CAS) using coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in Korean men with erectile dysfunction (ED). Subjects and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Subjects were 108 men who underwent CCTA at a health promotion center in Pusan National University Yangsan Hospital. Each subject who was evaluated for ED using the International Index of Erectile Dysfunction (IIEF) questionnaire, did not have past history and symptoms of coronary artery disease. We assessed association between ED and CCTA-based CAS. Results: The overall preval...

Correlation of Serum Adipolin with Epicardial Fat Thickness and Severity of Coronary Artery Diseases in Acute Myocardial Infarction and Stable Angina Pectoris Patients
Objective: Adipolin/C1q/TNF-related protein-12 is a family of CTRPs that is highly expressed in adipose tissue and has glucose-lowering and anti-inflammatory effects. Various risk factors have been suggested in the incidence of cardiovascular diseases such as a decrease in anti-inflammatory or an increase in inflammatory factors. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the correlation of adipolin with anthropometric, angiographic, echocardiographic, and biochemical parameters. Subject and Methods: A total of 90 patients who were candidates for angiography were included in the study and divided into three groups...

Nocardiosis: a neglected disease
Nocardiosis is a well-read but neglected tropical disease. It has varied geographical presence and a spectrum of clinical presentations. This review aims to concentrate on national and international epidemiology of nocardial infections with a systematic approach to their diagnosis and treatment. Nocardia masquerades chronic infections and ailments, may remain cryptic but progressive in its course. Unless suspected, diagnosis can be easily missed resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Thorough knowledge of local epidemiology, demography, clinical course and presentation, diagnostic modalities and antibiotic suscept...

Cyanotic Congenital Cardiac Disease and Scoliosis: Pre-operative Assessment, Surgical Treatment and Outcomes
Conclusion: Scoliosis surgery in patients with complex cardiac disease may be indicated to treat progressive deformities which produce severe symptoms. A multidisciplinary approach including a spinal surgeon, as well as a cardiologist, haematologist, respiratory paediatrician and spinal anaesthetist can evaluate the general medical condition and weigh the benefits and risks of surgery. Deformity correction can be performed using a meticulous technique and has produced a series of satisfactory outcomes. (Source: Medical Principles and Practice)
