Qualitative Evaluation of α-Synuclein – A Critical Step in Unraveling the Complexities of Autism Spectrum Disorder
α-synuclein is a widely studied biomarker in neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and neurodegenerative diseases (termed synucleinopathies), including Alzheimer’s disease (AD), Parkinson’s disease (PD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLBs), and multiple system atroph y. There are conflicting reports on the levels of α-synuclein in children with ASD compared to normal matched controls, with some reporting increased plasma levels and others decreased levels. Al-Mazidi, S., et al have reported that plasma Levels of α-synuclein in ASD is an indicator of disease se verity. We go a step further ...

Etiology and Antibiotic Susceptibility Patterns of Urinary Tract Infections in Children in A General Hospital in Kuwait: A 5-Year Retrospective Study
Conclusion: E. coli remains the most common uropathogen. A high percentage of the uropathogens causing UTI in children w as highly resistant to the first- and second-line antibiotics for the therapy of UTI. ESBL-producing bacteria are highly prevalent in children in our hospital. Local antibiograms should be used to assist with empirical UTI treatment. (Source: Medical Principles and Practice)

Allergy, Anaphylaxis, and Nonallergic Hypersensitivity: IgE, Mast Cells, and Beyond
IgE-mediated type I hypersensitivity reactions have many reported beneficial functions in immune defense against parasites, venoms, toxins, etc. However, they are best known for their role in allergies, currently affecting almost one third of the population worldwide. IgE-mediated allergic diseases result from a maladaptive type 2 immune response that promotes the synthesis of IgE antibodies directed at a special class of antigens called allergens. IgE antibodies bind to type I high-affinity IgE receptors (Fc εRI) on mast cells and basophils, sensitizing them to get triggered in a subsequent encounter with the cognate all...

Reconsideration of the Role of Regulatory T Cells During Pregnancy: Differential Characteristics of Regulatory T Cells Between the Maternal-Fetal Interface And Peripheral Sites and Between Early and Late Pregnancy
Regulatory T (Treg) cells play an important role in embryo implantation and pregnancy maintenance after allogeneic mating. Implantation failure, miscarriage, and preeclampsia are associated with decreased Treg cell numbers or dysfunctional Treg cells. Memory naturally occurring Treg (nTreg or thymus-derived Treg (tTreg)) cells were recently reported to accumulate in the uterus during the early pregnancy period and contribute to pregnancy establishment. Miscarriage cases are characterized by the downregulation of the total Treg cell numbers rather than the downregulation of paternal/fetal antigen-specific Treg cell numbers....

Trends in Imaging Patterns of Bronchogenic Carcinoma: Reality or a Statistical Variation? A Single-Center Cross-Sectional Analysis of Outcomes
Conclusion: CT is the imaging modality of choice for evaluating bronchogenic carcinoma and provides for precise characterization of the size, extent, and staging of the carcinoma. Among 162 bronchogenic carcinoma cases evaluated in the current study, a definite changing trend in the radiological pattern of squamous cell carcinoma and adenocarcinoma was observed. Squamous cell carcinoma was predominantly noted to be a peripheral tumor, and adenocarcinoma is predominantly noted to be a central tumor. Surveillance or restaging scans are recommended, considering the high mortality rate in patients with bronchogenic carcinoma.M...

Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction Risk Index Predicts One-Year Mortality in Patients with Heart Failure: An Analysis of the SELFIE-TR Study
Objective: Predicting outcomes is an essential part of evaluation in patients with heart failure (HF). While there are multiple individual laboratory and imaging variables, as well as risk scores available for this purpose, they are seldom useful during the initial evaluation. In this analysis, we aimed to understand predictive usefulness of Thrombosis in Myocardial Infarction Risk Index (TIMI-RI), a simple index that is calculated at bedside using three commonly available variables, using data from a multicenter HF registry. Subjects and Methods: A total of 728 patients from 23 centers were included to this analysis. Data...

Factors Associated with a High-Risk Profile for Developing Pressure Injuries in Long-Term Residents of Nursing Homes
Conclusion: The pr evalence of NH residents at high risk of pressure injuries was very high using the Norton scale, but the percentage of residents who develop these ulcers is definitely lower. Female NH residents with advanced age, dementia and a history of cerebrovascular disease should be carefully monitored. (Source: Medical Principles and Practice)
