April 2024 People & Events
Nancy Ellen Russell Casad, MS, RDN, LDN, passed away December 14, 2023. Casad earned her undergraduate degree from Duchesne College, her graduate degree from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and undertook doctoral studies there as well. She was elected the first chair elect of the Pediatric Nutrition Practice Group at the 1978 FNCE and served as chair there during 1979-1980. She served as a clinical dietitian at St. Jude Children ’s Research Hospital and was director of food and nutrition at Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis. For decades, researchers have studied the public health consequences of crime in America.1-3 A crime, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Law is “an act that is deemed by statute or by the common law to be a public wrong and is therefore punishable by the state in criminal proceedings.”4 Crime, particularly violent crime (eg, homicide, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and rape), captured the nation’s attention during the 1980s and ea rly 1990s because rates nearly quadrupled during that time.
