Exploring the Interconnectedness of Crime and Nutrition: Current Evidence and Recommendations to Advance Nutrition Equity Research

For decades, researchers have studied the public health consequences of crime in America.1-3 A crime, as defined by the Oxford Dictionary of Law is “an act that is deemed by statute or by the common law to be a public wrong and is therefore punishable by the state in criminal proceedings.”4 Crime, particularly violent crime (eg, homicide, aggravated assault, armed robbery, and rape), captured the nation’s attention during the 1980s and ea rly 1990s because rates nearly quadrupled during that time.
