Effect of different treatments for obstructive sleep apnoea on blood pressure
Conclusion: MRAs and ACEIs/ARBs can reduce blood pressure effectively in patients with OSA. RDN is a novel hypertension treatment that lowered blood pressure in such patients. CPAP was associated with mild but stable blood pressure reduction, and it might be helpful as an adjunctive therapy in OSA patients with hypertension. Blood pressure variability and structural brain changes: a systematic review
Conclusion: Increased BPV, in particular systolic long-term and systolic night-time BPV, appears to be associated with lower brain volume and hippocampal volume. This highlights the adverse effect that increased BPV has upon the brain, potentially contributing to cognitive decline, including dementia, in late-life. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Reproducibility of masked hypertension and office-based hypertension: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Blood pressure (BP) phenotypes have a prognostic significance for target organ damage in long-term studies. However, it remains uncertain whether a single baseline phenotype classification is reproducible over time and represents accurately the patients’ BP status. The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the reproducibility of masked hypertension and office-based hypertension either with ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) or home BP monitoring (HBPM). PubMed, Cochrane Library and Web of Science were searched to identify studies with paired baseline office BP and ABPM or HBPM measurements at two timepoints. T...

Exaggerated natriuresis after renal artery balloon angioplasty for flash pulmonary oedema: a potential complication in one-kidney renovascular hypertension
We report a very rare complication in a patient with bilateral atherosclerotic renal artery stenosis who underwent unilateral renal artery angioplasty because of recurrent flash pulmonary oedema. Shortly after the procedure, she developed extreme polyuria (over 201 in the first 48 h) with massive natriuresis (>1000 mmol urinary sodium excretion in the first 24 h). Most likely, the occurrence of this phenomenon is related to the fact that her contralateral kidney was atrophic and no longer functioning due to total renal artery occlusion. We provide an overview of the literature and discuss several mechanisms that may ...

Small RNA sequencing reveals placenta-derived exosomal microRNAs associated with preeclampsia
Conclusion: A total of 1013 placenta-derived exosomal miRNAs were identified by small RNA sequencing, of which 26 were differentially expressed. The function of one differentially expressed miRNA (hsa-miR-370–3p) was verified. Our results provide new perspectives on the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and potential biomarkers for preeclampsia diagnosis. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Nebivolol and incident cardiovascular events in hypertensive patients compared with nonvasodilatory beta blockers
Conclusion: The vasodilatory beta blocker nebivolol was associated with reduced incident cardiovascular events compared with nonvasodilatory beta blockers. Additional study of other beta blockers is necessary to determine if this is a vasodilatory beta blocker class effect or is specific to nebivolol. Hypertension determinants among Ghanaians differ according to location of residence: RODAM study
Conclusion: The current study identified several modifiable determinants of hypertension in Ghanaians, with differences between populations residing in various geographical locations. This highlights the importance of development and implementation of context-specific interventions targeting these determinants to reduce the burden of hypertension among Ghanaian migrants and nonmigrants. Association between placental global DNA methylation and blood pressure during human pregnancy
Objective: Gene-specific placental DNA methylation patterns differ between normal pregnancies and pregnancies complicated by hypertension. However, whether global placental DNA methylation is associated with maternal blood pressure remains controversial. Methods: Using multiple linear regression models, we analysed the association between maternal mean arterial pressure (MAP) at the third trimester of pregnancy and global DNA methylation in the placenta in 922 mothers using LC-ESI-MS/MS. To better characterize the contribution of genetic or epigenetic mechanisms, we performed isolated analyses in mothers with an...

Effects of different doses of canagliflozin on blood pressure and lipids in patients with type 2 diabetes: a meta-analysis
Conclusion: The current meta-analysis provides new evidence on different doses of canagliflozin as an antihypertensive agent in T2DM complicated by hypertension; however, LDL-C and the risk of UTI should be monitored. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Isolated systolic hypertension is associated with increased left ventricular mass index and aortic stiffness in adolescents: a cardiac magnetic resonance study
Objectives: Despite the high prevalence of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH) among hypertensive adolescents, its clinical significance is not determined. In addition, it is hypothesized that ISH with normal central blood pressure (BP) in young patients is a benign phenomenon and was hence labeled spurious hypertension (sHTN). Methods: Using cardiac magnetic resonance we evaluated a group of 73 patients with suspected primary hypertension, aged 13–17 years (median: 16.9, interquartile range 15.8–17.4; 13 girls), in whom, based on 24-h ambulatory BP monitoring either ISH (n = 30) or white-coat hyperte...

Increased mortality with intensive control in patients with higher baseline SBP and lower Framingham risk
Conclusion: Among the SPRINT participants with a baseline SBP of at least 160 mmHg and a lower Framingham risk score, targeting an SBP of less than 120mmHg compared with less than 140mmHg resulted in a significantly higher rate of all-cause death. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

The impact of maternal hyperglycaemia first detected in pregnancy on offspring blood pressure in Soweto, South Africa
Conclusion: Although maternal HFDP was not associated with childhood blood pressure at 3–6 years, the prevalence of elevated blood pressure in this group of preschool-aged children is concerning. Future research is needed to further evaluate childhood obesity as a modifiable risk factor to reduce hypertension and cardiovascular risk in an African setting. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)
