Urinary metabolomics profiling by cardiovascular risk factors in young adults: the African Prospective study on Early Detection and Identification of Cardiovascular disease and Hypertension study
Conclusion: Exposure to CVD risk factors is associated with a dysregulated metabolism in the above-mentioned pathways that may precede the development of CVD. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Sympathetic activation and heart rate thresholds for cardiovascular risk in chronic kidney disease
Aim: The current study was designed at assessing whether the sympathetic cardiovascular drive (SNS) is differently activated in chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients displaying less or more elevated resting heart rate (HR) values. It was also designed at determining at which HR cutoff value the SNS displays a greater activation. Methods: In 95 CKD middle-age patients we evaluated muscle sympathetic nerve activity (MSNA, microneurography) and venous plasma norepinephrine (HPLC assay), subdividing the patients in different groups according to their resting clinic and 24-h HR. Results: In CKD progressively g...

Role of plasma extracellular vesicles in prediction of cardiovascular risk and alterations in response to statin therapy in hypertensive patients
Conclusion and relevance: These pilot analyses suggest a mechanistic role for extracellular vesicles in the development of CVD, with significant and differential changes in extracellular vesicles amongst those at risk of MACE, and those on atorvastatin therapy. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Simple predictive score for nocturnal hypertension and masked nocturnal hypertension using home blood pressure monitoring in clinical practice
Conclusion: We developed a simple predictive score for nocturnal hypertension that can be used in clinical settings and for diagnoses. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Inverse salt sensitivity: an independent risk factor for cardiovascular damage in essential hypertension
Conclusions: Salt sensitivity and inverse salt sensitivity appear to be equivalent risk factors for CV events. The response to an acute saline test is predictive of CV damage for newly identified ISS individuals. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Socioeconomic status and dietary sodium intake in children from 2008 to 2019 in the UK
Background: Little is known whether children's sodium intake is affected by the national salt reduction programme in the United Kingdom (UK), particularly in relation to socioeconomic groups. We aimed to assess the trend of sodium intake among children from different socioeconomic backgrounds in the UK, from 2008–2009 to 2018–2019. Methods: Repeated cross-sectional analyses of data from the National Diet and Nutrition Survey in children aged 4–18 years. Sodium intake was estimated from a 4-day dietary record in years 2008–2009 to 2018–2019 and 24-h urine collection (2008–2009 to 2011–2012 only). ...

Blood pressure and kidney outcomes in patients with severely decreased glomerular filtration rate: a nationwide observational cohort study
Conclusion: In people with eGFR less than 30 ml/min per 1.73 m2, lower clinic office BP is associated with more favorable kidney outcomes. Our results support lower BP targets also in people with CKD stage 4–5. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Influence of the cardio-ankle vascular index on chronic-phase left ventricular dysfunction after ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction
This study aimed to investigate the possible influence of arterial stiffness assessed by the cardio-ankle vascular index (CAVI) on chronic-phase left ventricular dysfunction in patients with ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). Methods: A total of 208 consecutive patients with first STEMI (age, 64 ± 11 years; 86% men) who underwent reperfusion therapy within 12 h of onset were enrolled. We analysed arterial stiffness by measuring CAVI in a stable phase after admission and performed two-dimensional echocardiography at baseline and 7 months’ follow-up. Subsequently, we assessed left ventricul...

Is myocardial strain an early marker of systolic dysfunction in obstructive sleep apnoea? Findings from a meta-analysis of echocardiographic studies
Aim: We investigated the association between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and subclinical systolic dysfunction through a meta-analysis of echocardiographic studies that provided data on left ventricular (LV) mechanics as assessed by global longitudinal strain (GLS). Design: The PubMed, OVID-MEDLINE, and Cochrane library databases were systematically analyzed to search English-language articles published from inception to 31 December 2021. Studies were detected by using the following terms: ‘obstructive sleep apnea’, ‘sleep quality’, ‘sleep disordered breathing’, ‘cardiac damage’, ‘left ventri...

Cuffless blood pressure measuring devices: review and statement by the European Society of Hypertension Working Group on Blood Pressure Monitoring and Cardiovascular Variability
Conclusion: Cuffless BP devices have considerable potential for changing the diagnosis and management of hypertension. However, fundamental questions regarding their accuracy, performance, and implementation need to be carefully addressed before they can be recommended for clinical use. Virtual management of hypertension: lessons from the COVID-19 pandemic–International Society of Hypertension position paper endorsed by the World Hypertension League and European Society of Hypertension
The coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic caused an unprecedented shift from in person care to delivering healthcare remotely. To limit infectious spread, patients and providers rapidly adopted distant evaluation with online or telephone-based diagnosis and management of hypertension. It is likely that virtual care of chronic diseases including hypertension will continue in some form into the future. The purpose of the International Society of Hypertension's (ISH) position paper is to provide practical guidance on the virtual management of hypertension to improve its diagnosis and blood pressure control based on the current...
