Cardiorenai protective effects of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibition in combination with angiotensin II type 1 receptor blockade in salt-sensitive Dahl rats
Conclusion: Inhibition of SGLT2 in combination with an angiotensin II receptor blocker effectively improved BP salt sensitivity by reducing renal expression levels of sodium transporters including NHE3 and NKCC2, which eventually led to improvement of BP salt sensitivity and cardiorenal protection. Associations between duration and volume of muscle-strengthening exercise and clinically assessed hypertension among 10 519 UK adults: a cross-sectional study
This study examines the association between MSE duration and volume with clinically assessed hypertension. Methods: Cross-sectional data (n = 10519, adults ≥ 16 years) were pooled from the Health Survey for England (2012, 2016). Self-reported MSE mode (own bodyweight; gym-based), duration, and volume were tested for associations with sphygmomanometer measured hypertension (SBP ≥ 130 mmHg or DBP ≥ 80 mmHg). Poisson regressions with robust error variance were used to calculate the prevalence ratios of hypertension (outcome variable) across MSE (exposure variables: duration (minutes [0 (reference); 10â€...

Higher SBP in female patients with mitochondrial disease
Conclusion: Novel aspects of the role of mitochondrial dysfunction in blood pressure regulation are exposed in this study. Compared with the general population, female mitochondrial disease patients have a higher SBP. Left ventricular hypertrophy is more prevalent in patients with higher SBP. Clinicians should be aware of this to prevent hypertensive complications in mitochondrial disease patients. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Association of arterial stiffness with coronary artery calcium score in the general-population: the Swedish CArdioPulmonary bioImage study
Conclusion: c-f PWV is positively associated with increased risk of higher CACS, and can be valuable in identifying individuals at risk for sub-clinical atherosclerosis. Graphical abstract: http://links.lww.com/HJH/B863. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Application of the 2017 American college of cardiology/American Heart Association Blood Pressure Guidelines for cardiovascular outcomes among Tehranian residents
Objective(s): To evaluate the associations of cardiovascular disease (CVD) outcomes with elevated blood pressure (BP), stage I of isolated systolic hypertension (ISH), isolated diastolic hypertension (IDH), and systolic diastolic hypertension (SDH), defined by 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines among the Tehranian adult population. Method: We enrolled 7068 residents of Tehran (district No. 13) aged at least 30 years, who were free of CVD and not taking antihypertensive medications at baseline. Participants were categorized into eight categories: normal BP (reference group), elevated BP, stage I IDH, stage I ISH, stage ...

Adrenal BORDeAux reGistry: Bordeaux single-center study of hypertensive patients with primary hyperaldosteronism
Conclusion: The ABORDAGE population description is consistent with the data found in the literature. These characteristics are ultimately those expected in essential hypertension population, which therefore, could explain part of the underdiagnosis of primary aldosteronism. Only AVS is able to predict the lateralization of secretion with a post adrenalectomy recovery of about 90% in case of lateralization. The generalization of AVS would, therefore, increase the proportion of patients with primary aldosteronism cured. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

The association between socioeconomic status and prevalence, awareness, treatment and control of hypertension in different ethnic groups: the Healthy Life in an Urban Setting study
Conclusion: SES, in particular education, impacts hypertension treatment in the Netherlands, whereas the association of specific SES parameters with hypertension indicators differ across ethnic groups. Further exploration is needed on how sociocultural beliefs and behaviours may differentially affect blood pressure control across ethnic minority populations. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Effect of body size and intensive blood pressure management on cardiovascular and serious adverse events
Conclusion: Intensive BP management in overweight, class I, and class II obese patients significantly reduced the cardiovascular outcomes without increasing the safety risks. Nevertheless, further clinical evidence is needed to verify the effectiveness of intensive BP management in patients with normal weight and class III obesity. (Source: Journal of Hypertension)

Arterial stiffness throughout pregnancy: Arteriograph device-specific reference ranges based on a low-risk population
Conclusion: The current study presents reference ranges for BrAIx, AoAIx and PWV in low-risk singleton pregnancies. Further work is required to establish if women in whom measures of arterial stiffness lie above the 90th centile could be at increased risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes and to identify the optimum time for screening. Association between urinary sodium-to-potassium ratio and home blood pressure and ambulatory blood pressure: the Ohasama study
Objective: No studies have demonstrated the association between urinary sodium-to-potassium (Na/K) ratio and all out-of-office blood pressure (BP) [home morning and evening BP (self-measured at home), and 24-h, daytime, and night-time ambulatory BP] in the same cohort. We aimed to assess, which type of out-of-office BP is more strongly associated with urinary Na/K ratio in the general population. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted in the general population of Ohasama, Japan. Home and ambulatory BP levels were measured, and 24-h urine samples were obtained from 875 participants (men, 25.5%; mean ag...

Which domains of the theoretical domains framework should be targeted in interventions to increase adherence to antihypertensives? A systematic review
This study aimed to identify psychological factors associated with adherence in patients taking antihypertensives as these are potentially modifiable, and can, therefore, inform the development of effective interventions to increase adherence. PubMed, EMBASE and PsychINFO were searched to identify studies that tested for significant associations between psychological domains and adherence to antihypertensives. The domains reported were categorized according to the Theoretical Domains Framework. The quality of included studies was evaluated using the National Institute for Clinical Excellence critical appraisal of questionn...

The Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Trialists’ Collaboration: methodological clarifications of recent reports
Epidemiological evidence has consistently shown that people with higher systolic or diastolic blood pressure are at greater risk of cardiovascular diseases. However, there has been limited randomized evidence to determine the role of blood pressure level at treatment initiation in the reduction of cardiovascular diseases risk. The extent to which other characteristics of individuals, such as prior disease history, age or sex, should be taken into account has also been controversial. Furthermore, effects on less commonly reported efficacy and safety outcomes remain underexplored. The Blood Pressure Lowering Treatment Triali...
