Higher prevalence of diabetic retinopathy among female Chinese diabetic patients with metabolic syndrome
ConclusionIn this study cohort, female patients with MetS had a higher prevalence of DR. Patients tended to have thinner central retinal arterioles as the number of MetS components increased. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Clinical findings of acute acquired comitant esotropia in young patients
ConclusionAACE was most commonly found in the JUNIOR group, especially those aged 15 –16 years. AACE may encompass multiple diseases; using common diagnostic criteria and asking common questions regarding digital device usage is necessary to clarify the influence of digital device usage, and a multicenter prospective study is recommended. Posterior ocular structural changes and glaucoma susceptibility in patients with hemifacial spasm
ConclusionsThis study's outcomes show that long-standing HFS is associated with glaucoma-associated morphological OCT findings and decreased both CT and subfoveal choroidal vascularity. These findings may be related to the fact that the posterior ocular structures are affected by long-lasting paroxysmal orbicularis contractions. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Evaluation of vision-related quality of life in retinitis pigmentosa patients with low vision
ConclusionThe only modifiable factor affecting vision-related QoL in patients with RP was reading speed; thus, QoL could improve if reading speed is increased in patients with RP. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

An open-label, prospective, single-arm study of switching from infliximab to cyclosporine for refractory uveitis in patients with Beh çet’s disease in long-term remission
ConclusionsAlthough  no ocular attacks were observed for at least 1 year after IFX withdrawal, this prospective study indicates that IFX withdrawal should be considered carefully, even for patients in long term remission of ocular and extraocular lesions. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

A novel quantitative evaluation of deposits adhered to worn orthokeratology contact lenses
ConclusionThe two novel imaging methods used in this study detected significant amounts of deposits attached to worn OK lenses and were sensitive enough to detect a reduction in deposition following the use of the two cleaning solutions tested. Furthermore, these methods could visualize and quantify the thickness of lens deposits along the reverse curve. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Risk factors for failure of resolving optic disc pit maculopathy after primary vitrectomy without laser photocoagulation
ConclusionsClinicians should be aware that the presence of a preoperative macular detachment connected to the optic disc margin and preoperative headaches are indicators for an unsuccessful outcome of PPV without laser photocoagulation  in eyes with ODP maculopathy. Twelve-month efficacy and safety of omidenepag isopropyl, a selective EP2 agonist, in open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension: the RENGE study
ConclusionsIn this study, OMDI 0.002%, alone or administered concomitantly with timolol 0.5%, resulted in sustained IOP reduction over 52  weeks in patients with OAG or OHT. Concomitant treatment resulted in increased efficacy and increased incidence of conjunctival hyperemia. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Assessment of the anterior scleral thickness in central serous chorioretinopathy patients by optical coherence tomography
ConclusionsAST measured by SS-OCT was significantly greater in CSC eyes than in healthy eyes. Also, a visible SCS was detected in CSC eyes. Thus, thicker sclera in CSC eyes could be associated with the physiopathology of this disease. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Intraocular surgery under adalimumab therapy in patients with refractory uveitis: a single center study of 23 eyes
ConclusionSurgery for refractory uveitis under ADA treatment is safe and achieves good visual outcome and uveitis control if inflammation exists before surgery. ADA does not increase the risk of infections. Intraoperative findings of UME at surgery requires attention for postoperative relapse. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Visual acuity outcomes of anti-VEGF treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration in clinical trials
AbstractAnti-VEGF treatment for neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) has been evaluated in clinical trials. To select the best anti-VEGF drug and the best treatment regimen for nAMD, a thorough understanding of the characteristics of each anti-VEGF drug and treatment regimen is essential. In this review, we summarized visual acuity (VA) changes in 30 previous clinical trials of anti-VEGF treatment for nAMD. In most studies, ranibizumab, aflibercept, and brolucizumab improved the VA by 6 to 12 letters from the baseline VA of 50 –65 letters and maintained the VA improvement regardless of the treatment regime...

Clinical characteristics of central serous chorioretinopathy in patients by age
ConclusionCSC cases in those aged>70 years were associated with an increased proportion of women and having bilateral macular abnormalities, multiple drusen, and multifocal leakage sites. The BCVA and the SCT decreased with age. Patients with CSC aged 50 –70 years had the highest rate of flat RPE elevation on OCT. These characteristics need to be considered to make an accurate diagnosis, particularly in elderly patients. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Prevalence and factors associated with uncorrected presbyopia in a rural population of Japan: the Locomotive Syndrome and Health Outcome in Aizu Cohort Study
ConclusionApproximately one-quarter of the participants in this study from a rural population of Japan did not have adequate near vision. It is recommended that a public health intervention should be enacted to correct presbyopia, especially in the older age group, women, and those with uncorrected refractive errors.
