Comparison of visual performance between extended depth of focus contact lens and single-vision contact lens in eyes with monofocal intraocular lens
ConclusionsThe EDF CL substantially improved visual acuity at near to intermediate distances in IOL-implanted eyes. However, far visual acuity decreased under low-contrast conditions, and contrast sensitivity slightly declined at the middle to high spatial frequencies. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Clinico-epidemiological analysis of 1000 cases of orbital tumors
ConclusionsEpidemiology of orbital tumors has changed by the improvement of imaging techniques, establishment of novel clinical and histopathological criteria, and changes in population age structure associated with the aging society. Currently, lymphoproliferative diseases including lymphoma and IgG4-related ophthalmic diseases form the major orbital tumors in Japan. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Comparison of myopia progression between children wearing three types of orthokeratology lenses and children wearing single-vision spectacles
ConclusionRegardless of OK lens design, myopia progression in school-aged children was suppressed. The effect was examined not only via axial-length elongation but also RE change, and the myopia control effect by OK lenses was found to be 0.85 D over the 2-year period. Recovery of deepening of the upper eyelid sulcus after switching from prostaglandin FP receptor agonists to EP2 receptor agonist: a 3-month prospective analysis
ConclusionOmidenepag isopropyl improved DUES while maintaining IOP in over 70% of Japanese patients with glaucoma who exhibited DUES caused by FP receptor agonists; the improvement was observed within 3  months after switching from FP receptor agonists. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Comparison of the 24-h efficacy and safety of fixed combination carteolol/latanoprost and timolol/latanoprost in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma and ocular hypertension: a prospective crossover study
ConclusionThe 24-h IOP curve of patients in the LCFC group was similar to that of the LTFC group, but on the basis of the pulse rate findings, the effect of LCFC on the cardiovascular system over 24  h was less than that of LTFC. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Visual outcome of aquaporin-4 antibody-positive optic neuritis with maintenance therapy
ConclusionThis study demonstrates that patients with AQP4Ab-positive optic neuritis without maintenance therapy had the poorest visual acuity and the most recurrences one year after first onset. These results indicate that reducing the number of recurrences with maintenance therapy could improve the visual outcomes in patients with AQP4Ab-positive optic neuritis. Acute effect of pseudoephedrine on macular microcirculation in healthy subjects: an optical coherence tomography angiography study
ConclusionOral pseudoephedrine intake causes a significant decrease in superficial macular blood flow and SFCT. Impairmant of macular microcirculation can be detected noninvasively and quantitavitely by OCTA. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Influence of eye dominance on objective and subjective excyclotorsion in unilateral superior oblique muscle palsy: objective cyclotorsion measured by fundus photography
ConclusionIn USOP the angle of excyclotorsion in the dominant eye is smaller than in the non-dominant eye. This may imply that the vertical sense of visual space is mainly adapted to the dominant eye, keeping the subjective vertical close to the earth vertical. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Aniseikonia following intravitreal ranibizumab treatment for branch retinal vein occlusion
ConclusionMajority of eyes with aniseikonia in BRVO had micropsia. The BCVA as well as the micropsia improved following treatment with IVR for BRVO. BCVA and the presence of SRD were predictors of post-treatment aniseikonia. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Prostanoid receptor agonists for glaucoma treatment
AbstractIntraocular pressure reduction is the only available and evidence-based medical therapy for glaucoma. Currently, the first-line eye drops are prostaglandin analogues including latanoprost, travoprost, bimatoprost, and tafluprost. These drugs stimulate intraocular prostanoid false positive (FP) receptors and reduce intraocular pressure by increasing mainly uveoscleral aqueous outflow. For 2 decades since latanoprost was launched, no drug has been comparable in its efficacy. In 2018, a prostanoid EP2 agonist, omidenepag, was launched in Japan. Current FP agonists and EP2 agonists indicate comparable intraocular press...

Trends in surgical procedures and indications for corneal transplantation over 27  years in a tertiary hospital in Japan
ConclusionLamellar keratoplasty has replaced PKP in our hospital. BK and regraft have increased, whereas post-keratitis scars and keratoconus have decreased. Laser-iridotomy-induced BK has decreased during the past decade, whereas Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy has increased. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Inner retinal structure and visual function after idiopathic epiretinal membrane surgery with and without brilliant blue G
ConclusionBBG-assisted ERM surgery resulted in better visual improvement and fewer structural changes in the inner retinal layers. BBG-assisted ILM peeling is safe both functionally and anatomically. (Source: Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology)

Comparison of two-year treatment outcomes between subthreshold micropulse (577  nm) laser and aflibercept for diabetic macular edema
ConclusionAflibercept achieved faster and higher rates of anatomical and functional improvement than micropulse laser in DME patients. Long term efficacy of treatment did not result in significant differences between aflibercept monotherapy and micropulse laser in DME patients. Primary treatment of micropulse laser with deferred rescue aflibercept might be the treatment option without reducing the chance of visual improvement in DME eyes.
