Breast cancer stem cells as novel biomarkers
Clin Chim Acta. 2024 Mar 5:117855. doi: 10.1016/j.cca.2024.117855. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBreast cancer is the most common cancer and the leading cause of mortality worldwide. Despite advancements in detection and treatment, it remains a major cause of cancer-related deaths in women. Breast cancer stem cells (BCSCs) are a crucial group of cells responsible for carcinogenesis, metastasis, medication resistance, and tumor recurrence. Identifying and understanding their molecular pathways is essential for developing effective breast cancer therapy. BCSCs are responsible for tumor genesis, development, metastasis, treat...

Machine learning reveals serum myristic acid, palmitic acid and heptanoylcarnitine as biomarkers of coronary artery disease risk in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus
CONCLUSION: Altogether, these findings suggest that myristic acid, palmitic acid and heptanoylcarnitine have a good prospect for the warning of CHD complications in T2DM patients, and are superior to traditional lipid, blood glucose and blood pressure indicators.PMID:38438006 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2024.117852 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Globotriaosylsphingosine improves risk stratification of kidney progression in Fabry disease patients
CONCLUSIONS: Lyso-Gb3 improves the prediction of kidney outcomes in FD patients with a low risk of progression, suggesting that these patients may benefit from early intervention to assist in clinical management. These findings need to be externally validated.PMID:38438007 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2024.117851 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)

Metabolomics of male infertility
Clin Chim Acta. 2024 Feb 29:117850. doi: 10.1016/j.cca.2024.117850. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThis review explores the use of metabolomics in male infertility. Metabolomics, an evolving omics technology that targets the products of cellular metabolism, is valuable for elucidating underlying pathophysiology of many disorders including male infertility. The identification of reliable biomarkers is essential for accurate diagnosis and for developing precision therapeutics for those afflicted by reproductive dysfunction. Unfortunately, despite significant progress to date, the intricate relationships between these metaboli...

Rapid serum tubes reduce transport hemolysis and false positive rates for high-sensitivity troponin T
CONCLUSION: We suggest that proper tube filling during sample collection and use of RST tubes can significantly reduce the effects of hemolysis. In addition, laboratories should be aware that PST tubes have a non-trivial rate of false positives when hs-cTnT < 50 ng/l.PMID:38420909 | DOI:10.1016/j.cca.2023.117630 (Source: International Journal of Clinical Chemistry)
