The association between serum interleukin-1 beta and heparin sulphate in diabetic nephropathy patients
AbstractInflammation is considered an important mechanism in the development of diabetes mellitus (DM) and persists for a long time before the occurrence of diabetic nephropathy (DN). Many studies have demonstrated that a decrease in the endothelial glycocalyx (EG) is negatively correlated with proteinuria. To elucidate whether EG damage induced by inflammasomes in DM patients leads to the occurrence of microalbuminuria (MA) and accelerates the progression of DN, this study screened 300 diagnosed DM patients. Finally, 70 type 2 diabetes patients were invited to participate in this study and were divided into two groups: th...

Analysis of biochemical features of ST8 α-N-acetyl-neuraminide α2,8-sialyltransferase (St8sia) 5 isoforms
In this study, we analyzed the features of three isoforms, St8sia5-S, -M, and -L that had not been analyzed, and found that only St8sia5-L was localized in the Golgi, while the majority of St8sia5-M and -S were local ized in the ER. The localization of Golgi of St8sia5 depended on the stem region. In addition, the incorporation of exogenous GD3 was upregulated only in St8sia5-L expressing cells. Taken together, the localization of St8sia5 is important for the activity of the enzyme. (Source: Glycoconjugate Journal)

Systemic deficiency of GM1 ganglioside in Parkinson ’s disease tissues and its relation to the disease etiology
AbstractFollowing our initial reports on subnormal levels of GM1 in the substantia nigra and occipital cortex of Parkinson ’s disease (PD) patients, we have examined additional tissues from such patients and found these are also deficient in the ganglioside. These include innervated tissues intimately involved in PD pathology such as colon, heart and others, somewhat less intimately involved, such as skin and fibrobla sts. Finally, we have analyzed GM1 in peripheral blood mononuclear cells, a type of tissue apparently with no direct innervation, and found those too to be deficient in GM1. Those patients were all afflicte...

Thrombospondin type 1 repeat-derived C-mannosylated peptide attenuates synaptogenesis of cortical neurons induced by primary astrocytes via TGF- β
AbstractC-Mannosylation is a rare type of protein glycosylation and is reportedly critical for the proper folding and secretion of parental proteins. Still, the effects ofC-mannosylation on the biological functions of these modified proteins remain to be elucidated. The Trp-x-x-Trp (WxxW) sequences, whose first tryptophan (Trp) can beC-mannosylated, constitute the consensus motifs for this glycosylation modification and are commonly found in thrombospondin type 1 repeats that regulate molecular functions of thrombospondin 1 in binding and activation of transforming growth factor β (TGF-β). TGF-β plays critical roles in ...

Role of sialylated glycans on bovine lactoferrin against influenza virus
AbstractInfluenza is a worldwide plague caused by the influenza virus (IAV) infection, which is initiated by specific recognition with sialic acids on host cell surface. Bovine lactoferrin (bLf) is a sialoglycoprotein belonging to the transferrin family, and it plays an important role in immune regulation. It also shows toxicity against cancer cells and pathogenic microorganisms including bacteria, fungi, and virus. The purpose of this study is to assess the roles of the sialylated glycans on bLf against IAV. To this end, bLf were first treated with sodium periodate to destroy its sialylated glycans. Then, the binding acti...
