Diagnostic value of a liver biopsy in patients with an acute liver failure or acute liver injury
Conclusions Liver biopsy is indispensable when liver involvement by an extrahepatic disease is suspected. To distinguish AIH from DILI in ALI/ALF, serum IgG, and autoantibodies seem more helpful than liver biopsy; long-term follow-up is needed in these patients. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: opinions, population served, and management from a sample of French hepato(gastroentero)logists (PERSEPT study)
Conclusion The management of NAFLD is not considered satisfactory by French HGE who care for a relatively severe population. Noninvasive assessment of fibrosis and multidisciplinary management should be improved. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

The impact of hepatotoxic drugs on the outcome of patients with acute deterioration of hepatitis B virus-related chronic disease
Conclusions: Hepatotoxic drugs are closely associated with the development of organ failure and ACLF, and contribute to reduced 90-day survival rates among patients with acute deterioration of HBV-CLD. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Impact of psoas muscle index assessed by a simple measurement method on tolerability and duration of continued treatment with sorafenib in hepatocellular carcinoma patients
Conclusion PMI might be a predictive marker of tolerance to treatment and TTF in HCC patients receiving sorafenib treatment. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Paraneoplastic syndrome frequency and prognostic effect in hepatocellular carcinoma patients
Conclusion In PNS-positive HCC patients, hypoglycemia and hypercalcemia were associated with poor prognosis according to Child-Pugh score, whereas erythrocytosis and thrombocytosis were associated with good prognosis. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

The relation of esophagogastroduodenoscopy time and novel upper gastrointestinal quality measures
Objectives Various measures of esophagogastroduodenoscopy (EGD) quality have been proposed so far and the examination time was one of the first. The aim of the study was to compare the procedure time with novel novel quality measures – composite detection rate (CDR) and endoscopist biopsy rate (EBR). Methods It was prospective observational study. A total of 880 diagnostic EGDs conducted from 01.2019 to 07.2019 have been enrolled in the study. Results Median EGD time was 4.2 min. Procedures of longer duration were marked with higher CDR (26.3% vs. 11.8%; P  (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Transesophageal endoscopic ultrasound in the diagnosis of the lung masses: a multicenter experience with fine-needle aspiration and fine-needle biopsy needles
Conclusion This study highlights the efficacy and safety of EUS-FNA/FNB as a minimally invasive procedure for diagnosing and staging peri-esophageal parenchymal lung lesions. The diagnostic yield of EUS-FNB was superior to EUS-FNA. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

NSAIDs are not enough – a double blinded randomized controlled trial on the impact of intensive hydration for the prevention of post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography pancreatitis
Conclusions Intensive hydration significantly decreased the risk of post-ERCP pancreatitis by four-fold. Moreover, no cases of moderate or severe pancreatitis were observed in patients submitted to this intervention. Associated with nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, intensive hydration could constitute a new standard of care for patients undergoing ERCP. The predictive value of procalcitonin combined with C-reactive protein and D dimer in moderately severe and severe acute pancreatitis
Conclusion The parametric model constructed by using procalcitonin 48 h, CRP 48 h and D dimer 48 h can be regarded as an evaluation model for predicting moderately severe and severe acute pancreatitis. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Impact of social determinants of health on colorectal cancer screening and surveillance in the COVID reopening phase
Conclusions During the COVID reopening period, colonoscopies for CRC fell by over one-third with significantly more surveillance than screening procedures. Nonwhite patients and non-English speakers comprised a shrinking proportion in the COVID reopening period. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Estimating the optimum number of colon biopsies for diagnosing microscopic colitis: a systematic review
Microscopic colitis (MC) is an inflammatory disease of the colon characterized by persistent watery, nonbloody diarrhea. Subtypes of MC include collagenous and lymphocytic MC. Microscopic examination of colon tissue is crucial to confirming the diagnosis because the colonic mucosa often appears normal during flexible sigmoidoscopy or colonoscopy. We aim to determine the optimal sites and minimum number of colon biopsies required to diagnose MC from published studies. We systematically searched PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, and Cochrane databases from inception until October 2020 using the following keywords: microscopic,...
