Impact of high-dose glucocorticoid on endothelial damage after liver resection – a double-blinded randomized substudy
Objectives Postoperative endothelial damage potentially results in increased vascular leakage, tissue edema and subsequent complications. The preventive effect of glucocorticoids on endothelial damage after surgery is sparsely described, including the relation between endothelial damage and the postoperative inflammatory response. Thus, we aimed to assess the preventive effect of high-dose glucocorticoids on postoperative endothelial damage, and the association between endothelial damage and inflammation after surgery. Methods This was a predefined substudy of a randomized double-blinded clinical trial of methyl...

Factors associated with the development of extrahepatic malignancy in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a single-center longitudinal study
Conclusion Extrahepatic malignancies are frequently seen in patients with NAFLD. Diabetes mellitus, high baseline GGT levels, and significant hepatic fibrosis are associated with the development of extrahepatic cancer in patients with NAFLD. Comparison of liver function test- and inflammation-based prognostic scores for coronavirus disease 2019: a single center study
Conclusions FIB-4 was an independent factor for mortality with better performance compared to other liver function test- and inflammation-based scores in patients with COVID-19, while CAR was the only score independently associated with the clinical course in COVID-19 patients with possible NAFLD. The correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a cross-sectional study
Objective The aim of this study is to investigate the correlation between neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Methods All subjects underwent medical check-ups, which included the measurement of basic clinical, biochemical tests and imaging tests. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models and piece-wise linear regression were used to assess the relationship between NLR and PLR with NAFLD. Results All participants were divided into two groups: the Non-NAFLD group and the NAFLD group. Univariate analysis model...

Measurement of skeletal muscle volume is useful for predicting prognosis in patients with liver cirrhosis
Conclusion Skeletal muscle volume, especially ΔSMI, has a prognostic value equivalent to that of the MELD-Na score and HVPG. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Cardiac involvement in Wilson’s disease: a retrospective cohort study
Conclusion Cardiac involvement is not rare in adult WD patients. We suggest that cardiac evaluation should be routinely performed in the population. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

High plasma soluble thrombomodulin levels indicated poor prognosis of decompensated liver cirrhosis: a prospective cohort study
Conclusion Plasma sTM in cirrhosis was significantly increased in parallel with the severity of liver dysfunction. sTM elevation than 18 TU/ml indicated a poor prognosis of decompensated liver cirrhosis. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Safety and effectiveness of ustekinumab in elderly Crohn’s disease patients
We examined the safety and effectiveness of ustekinumab in elderly Crohn’s patients. Methods This retrospective multi-centre cohort study included Crohn’s patients ≥60-years old who commenced ustekinumab. We recorded Harvey-Bradshaw index (HBI), concomitant steroid therapy, treatment persistence and new infections or malignancies. Primary outcome was serious infections requiring hospitalisation. Results Seventy patients were included, with median age of 68 years. 43 (61.4%) had prior anti-TNF exposure, and 15 (21.4%) vedolizumab. Median treatment duration was 12 months, totalling 84 patient-years. Nine ...

Higher serum infliximab concentrations during induction predict short-term endoscopic response in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Conclusion Higher IFX induction concentrations predict endoscopic short-term response. However, induction concentrations failed to predict long-term persistence on IFX treatment. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Real-time gastric juice analysis with EndoFaster for H. pylori diagnosis: a large, multicentre study
This study aimed to assess the accuracy of device versions working with either 6 ml or 3 ml of gastric juice. Study design This prospective study involved 12 endoscopic units. During endoscopy, EndoFaster testing was performed and standard five gastric biopsies were taken. The accuracy was calculated by considering histological assessment as the gold standard for H. pylori diagnosis. Results Gastric juice analysis was attempted in 1279 patients, but it failed in 131 (15.5%) and in 10 (2.3%), with the 6 ml and the 3 ml device, respectively (P  (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation of premalignant pancreatic-cystic neoplasms and neuroendocrine tumors: prospective study
Background Endoscopic ultrasound-guided radiofrequency ablation (EUS-RFA) is a developing therapeutic approach for premalignant pancreatic-cystic neoplasms (PCNs) and small pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs). The safety and efficacy of pancreatic EUS-RFA were previously reported in small series. Herein we report our initial experience with RFA of PCNs and small PNETs. Methods This is a prospective single-center study including 12 patients with a median follow-up of 7 months, with either PCN or PNET (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Analysis of viral nucleic acids in duodenal biopsies from adult patients with celiac disease
Conclusion These data suggest that these viruses may not play a role in the pathogenesis of acute CD, but they do not exclude the possibility that viruses can act as a trigger for the onset of celiac disease. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
