BMI is important in predicting the loss of response in inflammatory bowel disease patients on tumour necrosis factor-α inhibitors
This study aims to evaluate whether the response to tumour necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) inhibitors (infliximab and adalimumab) could be influenced by BMI in IBD. Methods We identified a cohort of 181 IBD patients attending a single-tertiary centre, naive to biologic therapy and stratified them according to their BMI. The primary outcome is the first occurrence of loss of response (LOR). Results The median BMI was 26 kg/m2 (15–63 kg/m2). Approximately 68% of patients had LOR on both adalimumab (ADA) (n = 52) and infliximab (IFX) (n = 71). However, 83% on ADA with BMI ≥30 kg/m2 had LOR compared to 61% ...

Early sonographic response to a new medical therapy is associated with future treatment response or failure in patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Conclusion Sonographic response as early as 6 weeks after initiation of a new therapy may accurately predict treatment outcomes over 46 weeks and is superior to other markers used to monitor disease activity. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

A model to predict inhospital mortality in patients with cirrhosis, ascites and hyponatremia
Conclusion We have developed a clinically meaningful inhospital prognostic model with excellent discrimination that will enable clinicians to risk stratify hospitalized patients with hyponatremia, ascites, and cirrhosis. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Mean arterial pressure drop is an independent risk factor of hepatorenal syndrome in patients with HBV-ACLF
Conclusion A decrease in MAP was a valuable predictor of HRS in patients with HBV-related ACLF. MAP drop ≥9.5 mmHg may be useful for predicting patient prognosis and exploring new treatment measures in patients with HBV-related ACLF. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Acamprosate may be safer than baclofen for the treatment of alcohol use disorder in patients with cirrhosis: a first description of use in real-world clinical practice
Conclusions In patients with cirrhosis, acamprosate was associated with fewer unplanned admissions than baclofen, hence may be safer despite historical concerns. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Changes in the profile and therapeutic care of people who use drugs with HCV mono-infection: a retrospective study between 2015 and 2019 from a monocentric tertiary referent center in France
Background and aims People who use drugs (PWUDs) are the main group at risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) transmission and a key population for hepatitis C elimination. Multidisciplinary team (MDT) meetings were set up in France in December 2014 within regional reference centers to supervise the prescriptions and delivery of direct-acting antivirals (DAAs) to optimize the management of HCV infection. The aim of this retrospective study was to analyze the changes in the profile and therapeutic care of PWUDs with HCV mono-infection according to the evolution of MDT meetings in a regional tertiary reference center. Metho...

Anxiety in cirrhosis: a prospective study on prevalence and development of a practical screening nomogram
Objectives The prevalence and effects of anxiety on health-related quality of life and clinical outcomes in cirrhosis are not well understood. This is increasingly relevant during COVID-19. Our aim was to use the Mini-International Neuropsychiatric Interview (MINI) to determine the prevalence of anxiety, its association with clinical outcomes in cirrhosis and to develop a rapid cirrhosis-specific anxiety screening nomogram. Methods Adults with a diagnosis of cirrhosis were prospectively recruited as outpatients at three tertiary care hospitals across Alberta and followed for up to 6 months to determine the assoc...

Verification of hepatitis B–related hepatocellular carcinoma predictive models to evaluate the risk of HCC in patients with liver cirrhosis under antiviral treatment
Conclusion REACH-B can predict the risk of HCC occurrence in patients with compensated liver cirrhosis before and after antiviral treatment. GAG-HCC and TW1 could predict the risk before antiviral treatment. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Efficacy of omega-3-rich Camelina sativa on the metabolic and clinical markers in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomized, controlled trial
Objective Recently, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants co-supplementation was considered as alternative treatment in the management of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). This trial evaluated effects of Camelina sativa oil (CSO) as a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants on anthropometric indices, lipid profile, liver enzymes, and adiponectin in NAFLD patients. Participants and methods This triple-blind, placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial was conducted on 46 NAFLD patients who were randomly assigned to either a CSO supplement or placebo for 12 weeks. Both groups received a loss w...

Network meta-analysis: efficacy of treatment for acute, chronic, and prevention of pouchitis in ulcerative colitis
Conclusions This is the first network meta-analysis which compares the efficacy and tolerability of treatments in the management and prevention of acute and chronic pouchitis. It confirms that antimicrobial therapy remains the mainstay of treatment and adds weight to current guideline recommendations. Our results demonstrate that rifaximin and probiotics may deserve a more prominent role. While biologics are starting to show promise, large-scale head-to-head comparisons are warranted to validate the efficacy of these treatments.
