The prognostic value of P-wave dispersion and left atrial functions assessed with three-dimensional echocardiography in patients with cirrhosis
Conclusion The results of this study showed that patients with cirrhosis had higher left atrial volume, longer PWd and worse diastolic functions compared with the control group. Higher disease severity scores were associated with left atrial function and volume. In addition, left atrial volume measured with 3DE was a strong predictor of future adverse events, and minimal left atrial volumes had a higher prognostic value than any other left atrial function indices. Spontaneous regression of liver hemangiomas: a single-institution analysis of 46 patients
Conclusion Spontaneous regression of liver hemangiomas is an underrecognized phenomenon. Enlargement should not be a straightforward indication for intervention because it may be followed by regression. A regressed hemangioma should be considered in the differential diagnosis of liver lesions suspicious for malignancy. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Treatment in disproportionately minority hospitals is associated with an increased mortality in end-stage liver disease
Background Racial and ethnic disparities are a barrier in delivery of healthcare across the USA. Care for minority patients tends to be clustered into a small number of providers at minority hospitals, which has been associated with worse clinical outcomes in several conditions. However, the outcomes of treatment in patients with end-stage liver disease (ESLD) at predominately minority hospitals are unknown. We investigated the burden of the problem. Methods We utilized the nationwide in-patient sample (NIS) to conduct a retrospective nationwide cohort analysis. All patients>18 years of age admitted with ESLD ...

The utility of two-dimensional real-time shear wave elastography for assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection
Conclusion 2D-SWE has an excellent diagnostic accuracy equivalent to that of MRE for assessing significant (≥F2) and severe (≥F3) fibrosis. MRE demonstrated a higher AUROC than 2D-SWE, but this last one has advantages such as lower cost, fewer contraindications and greater ease of performance than MRE. Malnutrition and sarcopenia are prevalent among inflammatory bowel disease patients with clinical remission
Conclusion In conclusion, our findings revealed a considerable proportion of IBD patients in clinical remission to be malnourished or at risk of malnutrition along with a high rate of sarcopenia. This emphasizes the need for concomitant screening for nutritional status and body composition analysis in patients with IBD for provision of appropriate nutritional support, even during the remission period, and prevention of sarcopenia-related surgical and poor clinical outcomes.
