Factors influencing health-related quality of life in patients with Barrett’s esophagus: a qualitative focus group study
Conclusions In general, Barrett’s esophagus patients experienced a good HRQOL, with a minimal emotional burden from the diagnosis of Barrett’s esophagus. Most influencing factor on HRQOL was: experiencing reflux and dyspepsia symptoms. This study underlines the importance of adequate gastroesophageal reflux treatment and providing information to Barrett’s esophagus patients, tailored to their personal needs. Prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease in young Greek Army male recruits from 2006 to 2018: a 13-year retrospective study from a tertiary center
Conclusion The prevalence of IBD in Greek male recruits was 0.15% with a slight CD predominance. Remarkable changes in therapeutic trends were noted with an increasing use of biologics and reduced prescription of steroids, especially for CD. Pre-hospitalization proton pump inhibitor use and clinical outcomes in COVID-19
Conclusion We found that prehospitalization PPI-exposure is independently associated with worse clinical outcomes, including mortality in COVID-19 patients, regardless of the presence of cardiovascular comorbidities. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Peroral endoscopic myotomy treatment for symptomatic esophageal diverticulum: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) is a rapidly evolving technique for the treatment of esophageal diverticulum. The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and meta-analysis of the literature focusing on POEM for symptomatic esophageal diverticula, including an in-depth evaluation of its efficacy, safety, and limitations. A comprehensive literature search was completed to identify articles that examined the efficacy and safety of POEM for esophageal diverticula. Heterogeneity among studies was assessed using the I2 statistic. Meta-regression and sensitivity analyses were performed to explore the sources of het...

Endoscopic submucosal dissection in tumors extending to the dentate line compared to proximal rectal tumors: a systematic review with meta-analysis
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a validated treatment for early rectal tumors, but whether this therapy is efficient or not for rectal tumors extending to the dentate line (RTDL) remains unclear. We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the effectiveness and safety of ESD in RTDL compared to non-RTDL. A search in PubMed, Scopus and the Cochrane library up to April 2020 was conducted to identify studies that compared ESD in both localizations (RTDL and non-RTDL), reporting at least one main outcome (en bloc, complete resection, recurrence). Secondary outcomes were adverse event occurrence. Five...

Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt with transhepatic portal vein puncture guided by ultrasound: a technical alternative
Objective Evaluation of an alternative technique to perform transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS), using abdominal ultrasound to guide portal puncture. Methods Retrospective analysis of TIPS performed from January 2014 to December 2018 in an interventional radiology service. TIPS were performed according to the classic technique, except at the moment of portal branch puncture, when abdominal ultrasound was used to guide it, visualized its path within the parenchyma in real-time. Qualitative and quantitative variables were analyzed considering a 95% confidence interval and application of the Studen...

Efficiency of azathioprine monotherapy for maintenance treatment of autoimmune hepatitis in children
Conclusion Our study suggests that AZA monotherapy is an effective and safe therapy for maintaining remission in children with AIH. AZA monotherapy may be used for maintenance treatment of children with AIH, except in cases of overlap syndrome and also to avoid side effects of long-term used steroids and to improve treatment compliance in proper cases. Estimation of glomerular filtration rate in patients with cirrhosis: evaluation of equations currently used in clinical practice and validation of Royal Free Hospital cirrhosis glomerular filtration rate
Objective Conventional creatinine-based glomerular filtration rate (GFR) equations have been reported to overestimate renal function in patients with cirrhosis. The Royal Free Hospital (RFH) cirrhosis GFR equation was developed to accurately estimate GFR in this population. The aim of this study was to evaluate the ability of widely available equations [Chronic Kidney Disease Epidemiology Collaboration equation (CKD-EPI), Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equations (MDRD-4, MDRD-6)] and the RFH equation to correctly estimate the GFR of patients with cirrhosis. Methods We retrospectively analyzed data from pa...
