Validation and update of a prediction model for risk of relapse after cessation of anti-TNF treatment in Crohn’s disease
Conclusion Our previously developed and updated prediction model for the risk of relapse after cessation of anti-TNF in Crohn’s disease shows reasonable performance. The use of the model may support clinical decision-making to optimize patient selection in whom anti-TNF can be withdrawn. Clinical validation is ongoing in a prospective randomized trial. Predictive factors of inhospital mortality for ICU patients with acute-on-chronic liver failure undergoing liver transplantation
This study aims to identify predictive factors of mortality for LT candidates based on parameters measured at the admission into the ICU. Methods Sixty-four patients diagnosed with ACLF, admitted consecutively into ICU between 2015 and 2019, were retrospectively enrolled in the study. Data were assessed using univariate and multivariate regression analyses to identify risk factors for inhospital mortality and 1-year mortality. Results A total of 67% of patients were diagnosed with ACLF grade 3, and 25 and 8% with grades 2 and 1. Thirty percent received LT with a 1-year mortality rate of 16%, whereas for nontr...

Comparing 2D-shear wave to transient elastography for the evaluation of liver fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease
Background and aim The aim of this study is to evaluate the performance of 2D-shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and compare it to transient elastography. Methods Over 6 months, 552 patients with NAFLD underwent liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by both 2D-SWE and transient elastography with controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) at the same visit. Results LSM was not feasible by transient elastography (M/XL probe) in 18 (3.3%) and by 2D-SWE in 26 (4.7%) patients. The median LSM of transient elastography was 5.5 (2.8–75) kPa and of 2D-SWE 6.2 (3.7â...

Prognostic factors of elderly patients with hepatocellular carcinoma: should we be more courageous in treatment?
In this study, we aimed to determine the clinicopathological differences, treatment choices, survival times, and effective prognostic factors of HCC in the elderly and young populations. Methods All patients aged ≥18 years who were diagnosed histologically between 2016 and 2020 were included in the study. Patients were divided into two groups: 0.05). The presence of NAFLD, maximal tumor diameter (MTD), and portal invasion were found to be significant for survival according to the univariate analysis in elderly group (P (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Inclusion of sarcopenia improves the prognostic value of MELD score in patients after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt
Objective To explore the predictive value of model for end-stage liver disease (MELD)-Sarcopenia score for survival of cirrhotic patients after transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt (TIPS) placement. Methods 289 patients who underwent TIPS between February 2016 and December 2020 were included, they were divided into the sarcopenia group (n = 138) and non-sarcopenia group (n = 151) according to whether they were complicated with sarcopenia. Kaplan–Meier curve was used to analyze and compare the prognosis of the above two groups and multivariate Cox regression analysis was used to identify the independen...

Gastrointestinal sequalae months after severe acute respiratory syndrome corona virus 2 infection: a prospective, observational study
Introduction Post-coronavirus disease (post-COVID) symptoms arise mostly from impaired function of respiratory tract although in many patients, the dysfunction of gastrointestinal tract and liver among other organ systems may persist. Methods Primary data collection was based on a short gastrointestinal symptom questionnaire at the initial screening. A brief telephone survey within the patient and control group was performed 5–8 months after the initial screening. R ver. 4.0.5 and imbalanced RandomForest (RF) machine-learning algorithm were used for data explorations and analyses. Results A total of 590...

Illness stigma, body image dissatisfaction, thwarted belongingness and depressive symptoms in youth with inflammatory bowel disease
Conclusions: Youth who perceive greater IBD stigma are more likely to experience increased body image dissatisfaction due to their IBD, which may engender feelings of social estrangement and ultimately elevated depressive symptoms. Depressive symptoms and the psychosocial challenges faced by youth should be routinely monitored as part of comprehensive IBD management. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)

Risk factors for gastric cancer in patients with Lynch syndrome
Introduction The cumulative lifetime risk of gastric cancer (GC) in patients with Lynch syndrome (LS) is reported to be 8%. There is limited evidence on specific risk factors for GC and no agreement among guidelines on gastric endoscopic surveillance schedule in LS patients. Aims and methods We conducted a retrospective cohort study to identify risk factors for gastric precancerous conditions (chronic atrophic gastritis and intestinal metaplasia) and GC in patients with LS and a case–control study to compare the prevalence of these conditions with a control group. Results We included 385 LS patients (40...
