Endoscopic submucosal dissection of gastric neoplastic lesions in Western countries: systematic review and meta-analysis
Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for gastric neoplastic lesions removal is largely performed in Asian countries. Unfortunately, ESD diffusion, particularly for gastric lesion removal, is still limited in Western countries. We performed a systematic review of available data coming from Western centers. The en bloc and the R0 resection rates for all neoplastic lesions, including early gastric cancer (EGC) and dysplasia, were calculated, as well as the curative rate for EGC. Complications and the 1-month mortality rates were computed. A total of 22 studies from Europe (N = 15), Latina America (N = 6), and Canada (N = 1)...

Proton pump inhibitors reduce phlebotomy burden in patients with HFE-related hemochromatosis: a systematic review and meta-analysis
Background and aims Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) may reduce iron absorption and serum ferritin levels in patients with homeostatic iron regulator (HFE)-related hemochromatosis, reducing the need for frequent phlebotomies. Our study aimed to perform for the first time a meta-analysis of existing observational and randomized controlled studies to ascertain the overall effect of PPI use in patients with HFE-related hemochromatosis. Methods Studies in adults reporting the outcomes of PPIs use in hereditary hemochromatosis patients from Medline, Embase, Scopus and Google Scholar databases from inception to December ...

Seroprevalence of hepatitis E virus in Argentinean blood donors
Background Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is the main cause of enteric acute viral hepatitis worldwide. In this epidemiological framework, it has become a threat to blood safety and a relevant issue for blood transfusions. However, there is a paucity of data regarding prevalence of HEV infection. The aim of this study was to determine HEV seroprevalence in blood donors from different regions from Argentina. Material and methods Serum samples from 391 individuals attending five blood donor centers located in different regions from Argentina were analyzed for anti-HEV IgG and anti-HEV IgM. Results Overall, anti-HE...

Predictive markers of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in lean patients. A multinomial regression model and a 2k factorial analysis
Objective Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is associated with obesity and insulin resistance; however, there is a group of non-obese patients with NAFLD that need to be characterized. Our aim was to evaluate the factors associated with NAFLD in non-obese subjects in a third-level hospital. Methods A comparative cross-sectional study was performed. Participants were divided into four groups: non-obese without NAFLD (group 1), non-obese with NAFLD (group 2), obese without NAFLD (group 3), and obese with NAFLD (group 4). We evaluated the effect of clinical and biochemical characteristics with the disease by...

Hepatitis C and hepatitis C-related advanced liver disease hospitalisation trends before and after the Strategic Plan for Tackling Hepatitis C in the National Health System
Introduction This work evaluates the burden and trends of hepatitis C virus (HCV)-associated hospitalisations in Spain before and after the implementation of the Strategic Plan for Tackling Hepatitis C in the National Health System in 2015. Methods HCV-related hospitalisation discharges from 2005 to 2017 were obtained from the National Registry of Hospitalisations. A descriptive analysis of the hospitalisations was performed. Results From 2005 to 2017, there were 674 067 HCV-related hospitalisations: 1.2%, 29.9%, 63.9% and 5% of them due to acute, carriers, chronic and unspecified hepatitis C. Average age...

Chromium picolinate balances the metabolic and clinical markers in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial
Objective Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a complicated disease and is considered as a severe global health problem affecting 30% of adults worldwide. The present study aimed to evaluate changes in oxidative stress, adipokines, liver enzyme, and body composition following treatment with chromium picolinate (CrPic) among patients with NAFLD. Participants and methods The current randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study was conducted on 46 NAFLD patients with the age range of 20–65 years. Patients were randomly classified into two groups, receiving either 400 µg CrPic tablets in two div...

Interrater reliability of the assessment of disease activity by gastrointestinal ultrasound in a prospective cohort of patients with inflammatory bowel disease
Conclusion There is substantial agreement between operators of varying experience in gastrointestinal ultrasound findings in patients with Crohn’s disease or ulcerative colitis and this is repeatedly demonstrated over time. Thus, a well-trained operator should be sufficient to assess disease activity in patients with inflammatory bowel disease. (Source: European Journal of Gastroenterology and Hepatology)
