Ascitic Fluid Cytokines in Chronic Liver Disease: A Possible Prognostic Tool
Conclusion: Ascitic fluid levels of IL-4, IL-6 and IL-10 are higher in hepatocellular carcinoma patients than patients with cirrhosis alone. Levels of ascitic fluid IL2 and IL10 were proved to be a better prognostic tool than their levels in sera of the same patients. To conclude; patients with cirrhosis may be subjected to scheduale d examination of ascitic fluid cytokine to predect transformation into hepatocellular carcinoma. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Delayed Release Phosphatidylcholine is Effective for Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis: A Meta-Analysis
Conclusions: A 30% PC containing lecithin in delayed intestinal release formulation imp roves clinical and endoscopic outcomes, histologic activity and quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis. For the patients lack of adverse events is an important consideration. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Clinical and Endoscopic Characteristics of Chinese Cronkhite-Canada Syndrome Patients: A Retrospective Study of 103 cases
Conclusions: middle-aged and elderly people are the high-risk group; various GI symptoms are observed in Chinese patients; the typical endoscopic finding is multiple small sessile polyps; these GI polyps has a chance of malignant potential. Long-term endoscopic surveillance and follow-up are recommended for the Chinese CCS patients. Key words: Cronkhite-Canada syndrome, Clinical characteristics, Endoscopy (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Development of an online app to predict post-endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography adverse events using a single center retrospective cohort
Conclusion: Our app may allow an optimization of the patients ’ care, by helping in the process of decision making, not only regarding patient or endoscopist’s selection but also definition of an adequate and tailored surveillance plan after the procedure. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Co-Medication and nutrition in HCC: Potentially preventative strategies in Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC)
Background: Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death worldwide with about 841,000 new cases and 782,000 deaths annually. Given the clearly defined population at risk, mostly patients with liver cirrhosis, prevention of HCC could be highly effective. Summary: Besides regular ultrasound surveillance, numerous publications have suggested protective effects of diverse drugs and nutrients. However, none of those preventive options has made it into clinical routine or practice guidelines. We therefore summarize the current status on preventive effects of drugs such as statins, acetylsa...

HELICOBACTER PYLORI INFECTION in CHILDREN with CONCURRENT CELIAC DISEASE and TYPE 1 DIABETES MELLITUS
This study aimed to evaluate the association between Hp and concomitant CD+T1DM in children. Methods: In this two-center, case-control study, children who underwent esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy were studied. CD diagnosis was established by favorable histology and serology. Hp infection was confirmed by both histology and the rapid urease test. Patients were divided into three groups as CD only (CDo), CD+T1DM, and non-CD children who underwent endoscopy as controls. Results: Among the 1431 esophago-gastro-duodenoscopies performed, 783 cases were eligible. Overall, 215 cases had CDo (mean age: 9.12 ±4.18 years, 58.1% girl...

Humoral immune responses and Hepatitis B Infection
Background- Chronicity or seroclearance of HBV antigens is determined by the host immune responses. Current approaches to treat Hepatitis B (HBV) patients are based on inhibition of replication using different antivirals (nucleoside or nucleotide analogues) as monotherapy or along with immune modulators as combination therapy is being used worldwide for reducing the viral load. Understanding the role of immune cellular therapies with currently available treatments for persistent viral-mediated responses in HBV patients is unexplored. However, the generation of antibodies against a surface (HBs) and envelop (HBe) antigen of...

Reflux aspiration associated with oesophageal dysmotility but not delayed liquid gastric emptying
Abstract Introduction Severe oesophageal dysmotility is associated with treatment resistant reflux and pulmonary reflux aspiration. Delayed solid gastric emptying (SGE) has been associated with oesophageal dysmotility, however the role of delayed liquid gastric emptying (LGE) in the pathophysiology of sev ere reflux disease remains unknown. The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship between delayed LGE, reflux aspiration and oesophageal dysmotility. Methods Data was extracted from a prospectively populated database of patients with severe treatment resistant gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD). All ...

Worse Response to Ursodeoxycholic Acid in Primary Biliary Cholangitis Patients with Autoimmune Hepatitis Features
This study was to elucidate the clinical characteristics of PBC patients with features of AIH. Methods: We included patients with diagnostic criteria of PBC. All patients were treated with ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) and without immunosuppressive agents for more than one year. The biochemical response was evaluated at one year after treatment of UCDA. Results: Among 432 patients with PBC, 166 (38.4%) patients did not achieve biochemical response within one year of UDCA treatment. Non-responders had lower albumin (ALB) level and higher immunoglobulin G (IgG), alanine transaminase (ALT), alanine aminotransferase (AST), alk...

Prevalence of the Metabolic Syndrome in Severely Obese Patients Presenting for Bariatric Surgery
Conclusion: In severely obese patie nts the prevalence of the MS and the number of criteria met was high. However, over 20% of severely obese individuals have no MS and thus may be at lower risk for cardiovascular complications of obesity. It is currently unclear whether treatment strategies with respect to obesity should differ betwe en severely obese individuals with and without the MS. (Source: Digestive Diseases)
