Is the current Maastricht consensus report applicable for H. pylori management in Sub-Saharan Africa?
Helicobacter infection is highly prevalent in Africa, and its diagnosis, treatment and complications pose significant challenges particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While the new Maastricht VI/Florence consensus report offer much-awaited guidelines in the various aspects of the management of H. pylori, they also highlight some of the unique challenges that we face in SSA in adequately managing this infection. These include but are not limited to the treatment of all infected patients, the prevalence of gastric adenocarcinoma in SSA , particularly in the context of the so-called "African enigma", as well as the lack o...

Clinical outcomes of Medical management options for chronic anal fissures in a long term follow up: systematic review and meta-analysis
Conclusions: Calcium channel blockers performed well regarding the healing of CAF when compared to others in long-term follow-up. The superiority of botulinum toxin was not evidenced compared to topical treatments. More studies are needed to better assess recurrence rates. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

“Impact of Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745 on bacterial overgrowth and composition of intestinal microbiota in IBS-D patients: results of a randomized pilot study”
Conclusions In patients with SIBO, S. boulardii CNCM I-745 associated with dietary advice reduced bacterial overgrowth and improved digestive symptoms while restoring the intestinal microbiota. The increased abundance of F. prausnitzii coupled with symptom improvement merits further research. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Improvements in disease activity partially mediate the effect of tofacitinib treatment on generic and disease-specific health-related quality of life in patients with ulcerative colitis: data from the OCTAVE program
Background: Patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) often report impaired health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Tofacitinib is an oral small molecule Janus kinase inhibitor for the treatment of UC. In addition to previous demonstrations of improved clinical measures (e.g., Mayo score), tofacitinib has been shown to improve HRQoL in patients with UC. This analysis explored the interrelationships among tofacitinib treatment, HRQoL, and disease activity (measured using Mayo subscores) using mediation modeling. Methods: Data were collected from two 8-week induction studies (OCTAVE Induction 1 and 2) in patients with moderate...

Influence of Anxiety and Depression on the Symptoms of Achalasia Patients: A Retrospective Cohort Study in China during COVID-19
Conclusions: The outbreak of COVID-19 made AC patients and healthy people anxious and depressed. Depression rather than anxiety might worsen the AC symptoms. Interventional therapy might protect AC patients against psychological abnormalities during COVID-19. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

Endoscopic ultrasound gastro-entero anastomosis for benign gastric outlet obstruction due to large duodenal diverticula
Gastric outlet obstruction (GOO) is a condition characterized by inadequate gastric emptying due to benign or malignant conditions inducing an inadequate oral intake. In recent years a novel therapeutic treatment for this condition is given by the use of electrocautery lumen-apposing metal stents (EC-LAMS). In this case report we want to present an example of a benign condition treated by EUS-guided gastroenterostomy (EUS-GE) with the bi-flanged Spaxus ™ stent (Taewoong Medical Co.) mounted on electrocautery catheter. Current trends in the management of Helicobacter pylori infection in Serbia: preliminary results from the European registry on H. pylori management (Hp-EuReg)
Background: Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the most common chronic bacterial infection. Treatment effectiveness remains a subject of debate considering bacterial antimicrobial resistance. Our aim was to analyse the diagnostic methods and eradication treatments for H. pylori infection in Serbia. Methods: An observational multicentre prospective study was conducted in Serbia, as part of the European Registry on H. pylori Management (Hp-EuReg). Demographics, treatment indication, diagnostic methods, previous eradication attempts and treatment were collected at AEG-REDCap e-CRF. Modified intention-to-treat (mITT) and per...

The Different Prognoses of Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Previous Tenofovir versus Entecavir Treatment for Chronic Hepatitis B Virus: Analysis Based on 15 Propensity Score-Matched Studies
Conclusion: Our analysis indicated that there was clinically meaningful difference in prognosis of HCC between patients who received entecavir and patients who received tenofovir. Patients who received tenofovir experienced much lower overall death or liver transplantation than patients who received entecavir. Tenofovir treatment may be one of independent favorable factors of prognosis for HCC patients with CHBV. (Source: Digestive Diseases)

PIK3R3 missense and NOTCH2 synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms are associated with liver cancer
Background: Single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) of candidate genes also affects the occurrence and prognosis of liver cancer. We mainly explored the effects of PIK3R3 and NOTCH2 polymorphisms on liver cancer risk among Chinese people. Methods: Four SNPs (rs785468, rs785467, rs3795666, and rs17024525 in PIK3R3 and NOTCH2) from 709 liver cancer patients and 700 healthy controls were genotyped using the Agena MassARRAY system. The correlation between SNPs and liver cancer risk was evaluated using logistic regression analysis. The SNP-SNP interactions were conducted by the multifactor dimensionality reduction (MDR) method. ...
