Routine eyelid care for those without dermatitis
The eye is a unique structural and functional anatomic unit of the face and requires specific care and attention. Often, dermatologists are not familiar with the routine needs of the eyelid area. Despite evidence showing that lid hygiene may serve as an important supplement to therapeutic management of eyelid disorders, lid hygiene is often overlooked. Ophthalmologists and dermatologists have an important role to play in educating patients on the importance of proper eyelid hygiene and ensuring patient compliance. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Annular skin tumors and lymphoproliferative diseases
Determining the shape of the skin lesion may provide a diagnostic clue in dermatology practice, more commonly for inflammatory diseases but also for skin tumors. The annular formation may develop by diverse mechanisms in skin tumors. Annular lesions may occur from the onset of the tumor as sparing the central area or depression and/or ulceration in the center of the tumor or outward expansion of the primary lesion. Clustering of multiple papulonodular lesions sparing the central area, or relatively independent processes acting on the central and peripheral components of the tumor may also result in an annular appearance. Rosacea: The Eyes Have It
Rosacea is an inflammatory dermatosis, that poses a serious psychosocial burden because it mostly affects the facial skin but also the eyes. Its chronic course, characterized by fluctuating episodes of facial flashes and more or less persistent redness, sprinkled with inflammatory papulopustular lesions makes it a frustrating and uncomfortable condition to those who suffer from rosacea. Affected individuals are typically fair-skinned and light-eyed young adults, more often women between the ages of 30 – 50. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Ocular involvement in autoimmune bullous diseases
Autoimmune bullous diseases represent a heterogenous group of disorders caused by autoantibodies against the adhesion molecules, the location of target protein determine the level of cleft formation. The spectrum of ocular lesions in autoimmune bullous diseases can range from mild symptoms to severe involvement with sight impairment and even in some cases in blindness. In pemphigus vulgaris, the prevalence of the ocular involvement has been reported to be between 7% to 26%. The most common clinical sign of ocular pemphigus vulgaris is bilateral conjunctivitis with hyperemia. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Biologic therapies for psoriasis and eyes
Psoriasis is a systemic inflammatory disorder, manifested mainly by skin lesions, but the inflammation also may affect the joints and eye. Many comorbidities have been described in association with psoriasis, including metabolic syndrome and coronary plaques. The pathomechanism of psoriasis is multifaceted. Both genetic and immunologic aspects play a role in stimulating inflammation. Genetic susceptibility is conditioned by presence of the human leukocyte antigen-C*06:02 risk allele and the inflammatory reaction secondary to cytokines, such as tumor necrosis factor α, interleukin 17 (IL-17), IL-20, IL-23, and interferon a...

Sexually Transmitted Infections and HIV in Ophthalmology
The ocular and periocular manifestations of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are heterogeneous in etiology, manifestations, and complications. Etiologic agents include bacteria, viruses, parasites, and protozoa, which are most frequently transmitted via direct ocular contact with an active lesion or infected bodily fluid, autoinoculation, or dissemination from a distant site. Vertical transmission most commonly occurs perinatally during vaginal delivery. The complications of ophthalmia neonatorum can be severe with the potential for permanent blindness or life-threatening systemic involvement if untreated. (Source: C...

Skin and Eye diseases: Part 1
Eye and Skin are noted to be involved in some of the same disease processes, and both specialists are often consulted for disorders affecting the skin around the eyes.1,2 Three issues of Clinics in Dermatology, of which this is the first part, will serve to address the many eye and skin diseases peculiar to both as well as to focus on the periocular area that may lead patients to consult with both an ophthalmologist and a dermatologist. Each of the contributions has been authored by both a dermatologist and an ophthalmologist working together. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Prior Authorization Exemption Laws: Challenges and Opportunities for Dermatology
Prior authorizations represent a significant burden for both physicians and patients, especially in dermatology. They frequently incur additional cost from administrative duties and treatment delays as well as other negative impacts on care in at least 80% of cases.1 “Gold Card” (GC) programs, new state laws that allow physicians with high historical PA approval rates to be exempt from PA requirements, are one of the ways to reduce this burden. GC programs are gaining momentum, now the law in at least three states, with bills introduced in at least 16 other states. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Meibomian gland dysfunction and blepharitis: A common and still unsolved ophthalmic problem
Blepharitis and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) are very common, usually underdiagnosed and underappreciated diseases. More than 50% of patients seeking ophthalmologic consultations have symptoms and signs indicating one or both entities. We summarize the key points of diagnosis and management of both diseases, comparing the work of Dry Eye Workshop II (2017) with the dry eye blepharitis syndrome unification theory. The impact of MGD/blepharitis on ocular surgery also is described. Although MGD and blepharitis seem to be uncurable, most of the time they can be successfully controlled. Allergic disorders of the eyelid
Eyelid dermatitis may present with a variety of symptoms including erythema, pruritus, and edema, and has a wide differential. Allergic contact dermatitis due to allergen sources in personal care products, cosmetics, and fragrances is a leading cause of eyelid dermatitis, and is challenging to diagnose by clinical examination alone. Expanded patch testing, in addition to careful inspection of the surrounding skin for additional areas of involvement and clinical clues, remains an important tool in differentiating allergic contact dermatitis from other relevant etiologies of eyelid dermatitis including irritant contact derma...

Adamantiades-Beh çet disease: Between dermatology and ophthalmology
Adamantiades-Beh çet disease is an inflammatory, vascular disease of unknown etiology. The disease is named after two physicians, Benediktos Adamantiades and Hulȗsi Behçet, who both made significant contributions to the study of the disease. It was probably first described by Hippocrates in 500 BCE. Adamantiades- Behçet disease is most common in the region encompassing the ancient trade route known as the Silk Road. In Turkey, the disease is estimated to affect 80 to 370 people per 100,000 inhabitants, and it is also the country with the highest incidence rate. (Source: Clinics in Dermatology)

Chronic Eyelid and Ocular Itch
Chronic eyelid and ocular itch affect many patients seeking dermatologic or ophthalmologic care, and have a high burden on patient quality of life. Clinicians should consider the broad range of possible diagnoses when approaching the patient with itch of the eyes or eyelids lasting more than six weeks. Allergic conjunctivitis and allergic contact dermatitis are the most common causes of chronic itch of the eyes and eyelids, respectively. Other diagnoses to consider include atopic dermatitis, xerosis, neurogenic itch, dry eye syndrome, seborrheic dermatitis, blepharitis, rosacea, lichen simplex chronicus and papulosquamous ...
