Prior Authorization Exemption Laws: Challenges and Opportunities for Dermatology

Prior authorizations represent a significant burden for both physicians and patients, especially in dermatology. They frequently incur additional cost from administrative duties and treatment delays as well as other negative impacts on care in at least 80% of cases.1 “Gold Card” (GC) programs, new state laws that allow physicians with high historical PA approval rates to be exempt from PA requirements, are one of the ways to reduce this burden. GC programs are gaining momentum, now the law in at least three states, with bills introduced in at least 16 other states.
