Guillain-Barr é syndrome temporally associated with COVID-19 vaccines in Victoria, Australia
We present a case series of GBS reports submitted between February and November 2021 to our enhanced spontaneous surveillance system (SAEFVIC) in Victoria, Australia, following vaccination with either the adenovirus-vector vaccine Vaxzevria ChadOx1-S (AstraZeneca) or an mRNA vaccine (Comirnaty BNT162b2 [Pfizer-BioNTech] or Spikevax mRNA-1273 [Moderna]). For each report, Brighton Collaboration case definitions were used to describe diagnostic certainty. Severity was graded using the GBS Disability Score. The observed incidence of GBS following immunisation against COVID-19 was compared to expected background ICD10-AM G61.0 ...

Were US Asian Indian decedents with atherosclerosis more likely to have concurrent diabetes mellitus? Analysis of national multiple cause of mortality data (2012-2019)
CONCLUSIONS: The more frequent co-occurrence of DM and ATH as causes of death among AI compared to Non-AI suggest that the increased burden of these diseases among AI during life has vicious synergistic consequences in terms of mortality. Public health strategies targeted to AI should focus on prevention and clinical treatment of both conditions jointly, in all adults, and especially in women < 60 years.PMID:36307890 | DOI:10.1186/s13098-022-00933-7 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Healthcare resource consumption prior to asthma-related death: a nationwide descriptive study
CONCLUSION: Half of the patients who died from asthma received inadequate ICS doses and only a small proportion had access to biological therapies. Less than 15% were referred to a specialist.PMID:36239261 | DOI:10.1177/17534666221130217 (Source: Respiratory Care)

Access to Healthcare and the Utilization of Sexually Transmitted Infections Among Homeless Medicaid Patients 15 to 44 Years of Age
AbstractHomelessness poses a direct threat to public health in the US as many individuals face debilitating health outcomes and barriers to adequate health care. Access to STI care for the homeless Medicaid population  of USA has not been well-studied using administrative claims data. Our study aims to compare health services utilization, STI screening and diagnoses among people experiencing homelessness (PEH) vs. those who are non-PEH using ICD10 codes. We used 2019 MarketScan Medicaid claims data to analyze me n and women aged 15–44 years with a diagnosis code for PEH (Z59.0), non-PEH (without Z59.0) and assessed the...

Presentation of Patients with Eating Disorders to a Pediatric Quaternary-Level Care Emergency Department During the COVID-19 Pandemic
This study compares Emergency Department utilization at a pediatric quaternary-level care center by patients with eating disorders during the pandemic (March –Dec 2020) vs March-Dec 2019. We hypothesize that there was an increase in presentation of patients with eating disorders. An Informatics for Integrating Biology and the Bedside query of the electronic medical record system identified patients with eating disorder diagnoses per ICD9/ICD10 codes ag ed 6–23 who presented to the Emergency Department between March 1st and December 31st of 2020 and 2019. Subsequent retrospective chart review was carried out. Patients w...
