Ultrasound-assisted catheter-directed thrombolysis versus anticoagulation alone for management of submassive pulmonary embolism
CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute submassive PE, USCDT was associated with improved 30-day, 90-day, and 1 year mortality as compared to AC alone. USCDT also improved RV function and reduced sPAP to a greater degree than AC alone. Further studies are needed to verify these results in both short- and long-term outcomes.PMID:35643741 | DOI:10.1016/j.jjcc.2022.04.008 (Source: Journal of Cardiology)

Surgery rates for lumbar spinal stenosis in Denmark between 2002 and 2018: a registry-based study of 43,454 patients
We describe the development in diagnosis and surgery of LSS in Denmark between 2002 and 2018.PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected diagnostic ICD10-codes and surgical procedure codes from private and public hospitals in Denmark from the Danish National Patient Register. Patients diagnosed with LSS and those with surgical procedure codes for decompression surgery with or without fusion were identified. Annual surgery rates were stratified by age, sex, and type of surgery.RESULTS: During these 17 years, 132,138 patients diagnosed with LSS and 43,454 surgical procedures for LSS were identified. The number of surgical procedures ...

Railway noise and diabetes among residents living close to the railways in V ästra Götaland, Sweden: Cross-sectional mediation analysis on obesity indicators
Environ Res. 2022 May 16:113477. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2022.113477. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRailway noise is expected to increase in Europe and Sweden as well, following recommendations for a more sustainable transportation mode. This forecasted increase might lead to higher level of noise exposure, higher population exposure and potentially increased night-time exposure. Evidence supports an effect of transportation noise on several health outcomes, including metabolic conditions such as diabetes. However, few studies were directed to railway noise and present studies of diabetes and railway noise so far show ambigu...

Demographics of Children with Feeding Difficulties from a large Electronic Health Record Database
CONCLUSIONS: This study is one of the most robust studies defining the prevalence, demographic characteristics and phenotypic profiling of patients with feeding difficulties. In the United States. Our observations have implications on screening and resource allocation to recognize and manage this poorly understood population. This article is protected by copyright. The derivation of an International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision–based trauma-related mortality model using machine learning
BACKGROUND Existing mortality prediction models have attempted to quantify injury burden following trauma-related admissions with the most notable being the Injury Severity Score (ISS). Although easy to calculate, it requires additional administrative coding. International Classification of Diseases (ICD)–based models such as the Trauma Mortality Prediction Model (TMPM-ICD10) circumvent these limitations, but they use linear modeling, which may not adequately capture the intricate relationships of injuries on mortality. Using ICD-10 coding and machine learning (ML) algorithms, the present study used the National Trau...

Marijuana smoking and cataract
CONCLUSION: Like tobacco smoke, cannabis smoke contains thousands of organic and inorganic chemical compounds. Cannabis tar is chemically similar to tar found in tobacco smoke, and over fifty known carcinogens have been identified in cannabis smoke, including nitrosamines, reactive aldehydes, and polycyclic hydrocarbons. Thus, the association of cannabis with cataract that we report here is not entirely surprising. Further studies are warranted.PMID:35093261 | DOI:10.1016/j.jfo.2021.12.008 (Source: Journal Francais d Ophtalmologie)
