The impact of COVID-19 on heart failure admissions in Suriname-A call for action
CONCLUSION: HF admissions were reduced during the pandemic while HF readmissions increased compared to the pre-pandemic period. Due to in-person consultation restrictions, the HF clinic was inactive during the pandemic period. Distance monitoring of HF patients via telehealth tools could help in reducing these adverse effects. This call for action identifies key elements (digital and health literacy, telehealth legislation, integration of telehealth tools within the current healthcare sector) needed for the successful development and implementation of these tools in LMICs.PMID:37024313 | PMC:PMC10071347 | DOI:10.1016/j.jnm...

Cancers, Vol. 15, Pages 1985: Systemic Anticoagulation and Inpatient Outcomes of Pancreatic Cancer: Real-World Evidence from U.S. Nationwide Inpatient Sample
Conclusions: Long-term systemic anticoagulant use is associated with better clinical outcomes in terms of decreased risks of some life-threatening events, in-hospital death, and prolonged LOS among hospitalized patients with pancreatic cancer in the U.S. (Source: Cancers)

Cannabis Use and Its Association With Thirty- and Ninety-Day Hospital Readmissions for Patients Admitted for an Inflammatory Bowel Disease Exacerbation
CONCLUSION: Pre-admission cannabis use was found to be associated with 30-day readmission among patients with UC, but not with 30-day readmission for patients with CD nor with 90-day readmission, following an IBD exacerbation.PMID:36895626 | PMC:PMC9990718 | DOI:10.14740/jocmr4846 (Source: Clin Med Res)

Can Pre-Hospital Medical Management Predict In-Hospital Mortality in Trauma?
Am Surg. 2023 Mar 10:31348231161788. doi: 10.1177/00031348231161788. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe current literature demonstrates an association between both size and presence of TBI and its effects on mortality; however, it does not readily address the morbidity and associated functional outcomes of those who survive. We hypothesize that the likelihood of discharge to home decreases with advancement of age in the presence of TBI. This is a single-center study of trauma registry data, inclusive years July 1, 2016, to October 31, 2021. The inclusion criteria was based upon age (≥40 years), and ICD10 diagnosis of a TB...

A crowdsourcing database for the copy-number variation of the Spanish population
CONCLUSION: SPACNACS facilitates disease gene discovery by providing detailed information of the local variability of the population and exemplifies how to reuse genomic data produced for other purposes to build a local reference database.PMID:36894999 | DOI:10.1186/s40246-023-00466-8 (Source: Cancer Control)

Traumatic Brain Injury Under Triage Risk: A Rural Trauma System Experience
CONCLUSIONS: The likelihood of under triage in the adult TBI trauma population is associated with increasing AIS head injuries and increasing ISS and among those with mental health comorbidities. This evidence and additional protective factors, such as patients on anticoagulant therapy, may aid in education and outreach efforts to reduce under triage among the regional referring centers.PMID:36793222 | DOI:10.1177/00031348231157823 (Source: The American Surgeon)
