Long-term exposure to air pollution and chronic kidney disease-associated mortality - results from the pooled cohort of the European multicentre ELAPSE-study
In conclusion, our results suggest an association between air pollution from different sources and CKD-related mortality.PMID:38649012 | DOI:10.1016/j.envres.2024.118942 (Source: Environmental Research)

Use of natural language processing to uncover racial bias in obstetrical documentation
Natural Language Processing (NLP), a form of Artificial Intelligence, allows free-text based clinical documentation to be integrated in ways that facilitate data analysis, data interpretation and formation of individualized medical and obstetrical care. In this cross-sectional study, we identified all births during the study period carrying the radiology-confirmed diagnosis of fibroid uterus in pregnancy (defined as size of largest diameter of>5  cm) by using an NLP platform and compared it to non-NLP derived data using ICD10 codes of the same diagnosis. M üllerian anomalies in girls with congenital solitary kidney
ConclusionsThe prevalence of MA in patients with congenital SFK was 24% among those age 10  years or older, and 38% were obstructive. This justifies routine screening pelvic ultrasound in girls with congenital SFK to improve early diagnosis.Graphical abstractA higher resolution version of the Graphical abstract is available asSupplementary information (Source: Pediatric Nephrology)

Impact of early follow-up CT in the conservative management of traumatic brain injury on surgical decision making: A retrospective, single-center analysis with special respect to coagulopathy
ConclusionEarly routine follow-up CT does neither anticipate imminent neurological deterioration nor impact surgical decision making. A substantial number of patients with initially stable follow-up imaging need delayed surgery due to conservative treatment failure. If patients can be monitored clinically, surgical decision making depends on clinical status. Patients with coagulopathy do not present with larger lesions, but show a higher ratio of drastic increase in SDH in contrast to contusions. (Source: European Journal of Trauma and Emergency Surgery)

Viruses, Vol. 16, Pages 461: Hereditary Connective Tissue Diseases and Risk of Post-Acute SARS-CoV-2
Jain We completed a retrospective review of data collected by the JH-CROWN consortium based on ICD10 codes for a hospitalized cohort. The severity and prevalence of COVID-19 and development of PASC within heritable connective tissue diseases were unknown; however, clinical observation suggested a thorough examination was necessary. We compared rates of disease severity, death, and PASC in connective tissue diseases versus the entire cohort as well as in diabetes and hypertension to determine if connective tissue disease was a risk factor. Of the 15,676 patients in the database, 63 [0.40%] had a connective tissue disea...

MRSL: a causal network pruning algorithm based on GWAS summary data
Brief Bioinform. 2024 Jan 22;25(2):bbae086. doi: 10.1093/bib/bbae086.ABSTRACTCausal discovery is a powerful tool to disclose underlying structures by analyzing purely observational data. Genetic variants can provide useful complementary information for structure learning. Recently, Mendelian randomization (MR) studies have provided abundant marginal causal relationships of traits. Here, we propose a causal network pruning algorithm MRSL (MR-based structure learning algorithm) based on these marginal causal relationships. MRSL combines the graph theory with multivariable MR to learn the conditional causal structure using on...

Patient acceptance of teleneurology across neurologic conditions
DiscussionPatients find their outpatient teleneurology experience highly acceptable independent of neurologic condition. Those with more comorbidity report higher acceptability. Use of teleneurology may be useful and acceptable across many outpatient neurologic conditions including for more medically complex patients. (Source: Journal of Neurology)

Development and validation of new multimorbidity-weighted index for ICD-10-coded electronic health record and claims data: an observational study
Conclusions MWI-ICD10 captured the prevalence of chronic conditions nearly identically to that of the validated MWI-ICD9, along with notable but explicable changes across the ICD-10 transition. This new comprehensive person-centred index enables quantification of cumulative disease burden and physical functioning in adults as a clinically meaningful measure of multimorbidity in electronic health record and claims data.
