Prognostic Significance of Central Skull Base Remodeling in Chiari II Malformation [PEDIATRIC NEUROIMAGING]
CONCLUSIONS: Pediatric patients with Chiari II malformation who ultimately required surgical hydrocephalus treatment had greater outward convexity of the basiocciput but had greater posterior atlanto-occipital membrane outward convexity only if the repair was performed postnatally. Together these measurements may be useful in predicting the need for hydrocephalus treatment. (Source: American Journal of Neuroradiology)

Flexible low-profile external ventricular drain catheter for real-time brain monitoring
Biosens Bioelectron. 2024 Apr 2;255:116267. doi: 10.1016/j.bios.2024.116267. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExternal ventricular drainage is one of the most common neurosurgical procedures in the world for acute hydrocephalus, which must be performed carefully by a neurosurgeon. Although various neuromonitoring external ventricular drain (EVD) catheters have been utilized, they still suffer from rigidity and bulkiness to mitigate post-EVD placement trauma. Here, we introduce a flexible and low-profile smart EVD catheter using a class of technologies with sensitive electrical materials, seamless integration, and flexible mec...

Venous Anatomy of the Central Nervous System
Comprehensive understanding of venous anatomy is a key factor in the approach to a multitude of conditions. Moreover, the venous system has become the center of attention as a new frontier for treatment of diseases such as idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), arteriovenous malformation (AVM), pulsatile tinnitus, hydrocephalus, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) venous fistulas. Its knowledge is ever more an essential requirement of the modern brain physician. In this article, the authors explore the descriptive and functional anatomy of the venous system of the CNS in 5 subsections: embryology, dural sinuses, cortical ve...

The availability, access, challenges and advancements in neurosurgical care in Africa: a mini review
Ann Med Surg (Lond). 2024 Feb 15;86(4):2011-2015. doi: 10.1097/MS9.0000000000001805. eCollection 2024 Apr.ABSTRACTThe availability and accessibility of neurosurgical care across Africa remains limited despite recent advancements. Overall, Africa accounts for 15% of the global neurosurgical disease burden but has access to less than 1% of neurosurgeons globally. While the number of neurosurgeons has increased in recent decades, huge workforce shortages remain, with the region facing the second-largest neurosurgical deficit. Access to adequate facilities and equipment is also lacking. Barriers like poverty, conflicts, and di...

Group B Streptococcus Brain Abscess in a Neonate with Bilateral Otorrhea
Conclusion Brain abscess can occur as a sequela of GBS meningitis in neonates, but they are rare. Otogenic infections require prompt evaluation and treatment as they can progress to serious central nervous infections in neonates.
