Multimodal radionuclide shuntography for device patency: New procedural tips for anuncommon historical technique
Hell J Nucl Med. 2024 Jan-Apr;27(1):58-63. doi: 10.1967/s002449912705. Epub 2024 Apr 18.ABSTRACTCerebrospinal fluid (CSF) shunting is an established long-term treatment option for hydrocephalus, and is one of the most commonly performed neurosurgical procedures in western countries.Despite advances in CSF shunt design and management, its failure rates remain high and is most commonly due to obstruction and infection.Cerebrospinal fluidshunt failure diagnosis should be prompt and accurate in establishing timely if its revision is appropriate. Radionuclide shuntography with technetium-99m-diethylenetriaminepetaacetic acid (9...

Rare vermian pilocytic astrocytoma with recurrent spontaneous hemorrhage in the elderly: A case report and review of literature
CONCLUSION: PA in the elderly is a rare disease with distinct histologic and genetic peculiarities. This case review showed one of the oldest cases of cerebellar vermian PA presenting with recurrent spontaneous intratumoral hemorrhage, an extremely rare occurrence in benign glioma. Although complete surgical excision is recommended, partial resection is advocated for morbidly adherent tumors. Overall prognosis is worse in elderly PA.PMID:38628526 | PMC:PMC11021065 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_978_2023 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Secondary normal pressure hydrocephalus following pituitary apoplexy: A case report
CONCLUSION: This case suggests that sNPH can develop even after a small subarachnoid hemorrhage caused by a pituitary apoplexy in LOVA patients. If the aqueduct of Sylvius is open, sNPH with a LOVA background can be successfully treated with LPS placement.PMID:38628523 | PMC:PMC11021090 | DOI:10.25259/SNI_32_2024 (Source: Surgical Neurology International)

Temporal bone squamous cell carcinoma: Aggressive behavior coursing with cerebellar invasion and hydrocephalus

GSE241018 SMARCA4 loss and mutated β-catenin induce proliferative lesions in the murine embryonic cerebellum [scRNA-seq]
Contributors : Carolin G öbel ; Melanie Schoof ; Dörthe Holdhof ; Michael Spohn ; Ulrich SchüllerSeries Type : Expression profiling by high throughput sequencingOrganism : Mus musculusAlmost all medulloblastomas (MB) of the Wingless/Int-1 (WNT) type are characterized by hotspot mutations in CTNNB1, and mouse models have convincingly demonstrated the tumor-initiating role of these mutations. Additional alterations in SMARCA4 are detected in around 20% of WNT MB, but their functional role is mostly unknown. We therefore amended previously described Blbp cre::Ctnnb1(ex3)fl/wt mice by the introduction of a floxed Smarc...

Comparison of decline in different cognitive domain in patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus
AbstractWe sought to describe the cognitive profile of patients with Idiopathic Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (iNPH) using a comprehensive neuropsychological battery. Based on age and education correlated norms, we aimed to compare performance in each measured cognitive domain: executive functions (EFs), verbal memory (VM), non-verbal memory (nVM), visuoconstructional abilities (VA) and attention/psychomotor speed (A/PS). Patients diagnosed with iNPH underwent comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation before shunting. Their performance was compared to the age and education correlated norms. Correlation of different cogni...

Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Surgery in Pediatrics: Does Preoperative Skin Antisepsis with Chlorhexidine/Alcohol Reduce Postoperative Shunt Infection Rate?
Conclusions Two steps of preoperative skin antisepsis, first using chlorhexidine/alcohol and then povidone-iodine scrub solution, may significantly reduce the infection rate in pediatric VP shunt surgeries. Carnitine palmitoyltransferase II (CPT II) deficiency responsible for refractory cardiac arrhythmias, acute multiorgan failure and early fatal outcome
ConclusionsCPTII deficiency may be suspected in newborns showing cardiac arrhythmias, associated or not with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, polycystic kidneys, brain malformations, hepatomegaly. Its diagnosis should be even more suspected and investigated in cases of increased plasmatic levels of creatine phosphokinase and acylcarnitines in addition to kidney, heart and liver dysfunctions, as occurred in the present patient. Accurate family history, extended metabolic screening, and multidisciplinary approach are necessary for diagnosis and adequate management of affected subjects. Next generation sequencing (NGS) techniques...

Comparison of MRI findings of hypothalamic-optic chiasmatic gliomas and craniopharyngiomas
CONCLUSION: Although some neuroimaging findings may overlap, features such as presence of cyst and calcification, brain stem and optic pathway involvement, different enhancement patterns, and ADC values may be helpful in the differential diagnosis of HOCGs and craniopharyngiomas.PMID:38613353 | DOI:10.1177/02841851241241527 (Source: Acta Radiologica)

Idiopathic intracranial hypertension as the initial presenting manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus in a child
We report a 12-year-old girl presented with chronic holocranial headache and occasional episodes of projectile vomiting for the last 6 months and then developed blurring of vision for the last month. She fulfilled the criteria for IIH. Subsequent evaluation revealed a diagnosis of SLE. The occurrence of IIH in SLE is not coincidental and is reported in 1%-5.4% of patients with SLE. Though corticosteroids have not been widely used in IIH, underlying SLE warranted administering corticosteroids with subsequent complete resolution of IIH. Pediatricians, neurologists, intensivists, and ophthalmologists should consider SLE as a ...
