Advice Paying off Loans :(
Hi everyone! Sorry if this has already been answered, but I’m interested to hear other people’s opinions/experiences with different debt relief programs. I’m a current first year so I still have time, but my debt is already adding up lol. Does anyone have experience with the army or their health professions scholarship? I’m also interested in how it works at hospitals who offer debt relief packages. Is it worth it to work at a corporate hospital with loan payment options? I really want to... What is a normal patient volume?
Just curious. I’m early out of residency and just not sure what is normal for a community type hospital based practice. I see about 10-15 consults a week, and about 30-40 followups, with about 20-25 on treatment. Averaging about 70 patient visits per week. Also have tumor board at 630am on 3 days per week (not helping with my energy levels). We also do a lot of brachy and spaceoar, sbrt. Suppose I’d just like to know if this is normal, because then I can go with it. But if not normal, then... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Fellowship Training Goes Down The Drain
Did you all see the new abysmal fellowship match rates? So many open spots, even PEM and GI didn’t fill. So many children’s hospitals are now hiring NP-only pediatric hospitalist teams, but if you’re a pediatrician who wants to work as a hospitalist, woops sorry you need to be hospitalist fellowship trained! And there is recently an EM fellowship that accepted an NP and the NP completed it (ultrasound). Peds may be next … Peds training has become a joke. So sad and if you think I’m being... What will the future look like in the healthcare field?
My local hospital recently enacted temporary employee pay cuts and benefit suspensions and it caught me off guard. As a nontraditional student who is working towards the goal of becoming a physician, it made me wonder what the economy/job market will look like once I complete. Now I have three years before I even apply to medical school (1 year left of bachelor's & 2 years for DIY), but I would like to fully understand what I am getting into. Is this happening everywhere? Should I be... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Hobby or volunteering?
I recently acquired a position called “volunteer cook” for an organization helping people with food insecurity, basically a food pantry with some shelter space. I can donate whatever food I want to donate that I’ve made, and so far I’ve mostly been doing cookies and peanut butter jelly sandwiches, just basic stuff like that. (This is subject to change.) Not to get too specific, but I’ve heard baking for hospital staff and crocheting clothes for premature babies both be classified as... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Who to put as contact if combining experiences?
I was a hospital volunteer at two different hospitals but performed the same function. Because the role was super similar at both (and since I am also running out of space), I will be combining these experiences and writing about them under one section in my W/A. Question is, who do I list as a contact and can I list multiple contacts? Each hospital had its own volunteer program so there are two different coordinators. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Academic, federal position - a few months in
I have had some ups and downs in my career, as I've worked to find a position that facilitated some academic engagement, reasonable compensation, and allowed me to feel good about my clinical work. No job is perfect, but after several months in a new position, I think I'm the happiest I've been since residency. I took a federal position at an active duty military hospital that is a primary site for a residency program. I have a case load of 4-8 inpatients, and the residents do all the... 1st year
Hi! What should we be able to do at the end of the 1st year of residency in ophthalmology? At the hospital we don't have many cases and I still have difficulties recognizing large elements at the back of the eye or important pathologies, for example hypertensive/diabetic retinopathy or macular edema. At this moment, I didn't even have retinal detachments... I started to panic and I would need your advice, because I'm already thinking of giving up... It’s normal? I think that at the end of...
