UC San Fransisco (UCSF)/San Franscisco General Hospital (SFGH) Residency Reviews
Long time reader...first time threader. Any thoughts out there about the new program starting at SFGH in 2008? I'm applying for the entering class and wonder what the risks/benefits/perceptions are of a new program? I haven't seen this kind of thread in any of the FAQs so forgive me if I pull a FMcFP. Alameda County/Highland Residency Reviews
Program: Highland Hospital in Oakland, CA Residents: There are 10 per year in a PGY 1-4 format. This is a very self-selecting program. The residents let you know it from the start. They are all happy to be there and really love and believe in the program. There is a mix of married and single people, and high camaraderie amongst them. I wasn't able to make it to the mixer the night before, but I heard there was great turn out, which is the usual for the group currently there. There... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Ketamine
I have an medically complex patient with severe pain and severe MDD. They were admitted to the medical hospital and in conjunction with the pain service we initiated PO ketamine. Frankly, I was blown away by the response. Rapid, immediate improvement in both pain and depression which has also allowed them to progress medically. I truly think the ketamine is having a direct effect on this patients depression and the mental status improvement isn't just mediated through reduction in pain. The... Should I apply this cycle or wait?
I graduated from undergrad last spring and have been indecisive about applying to medical school. After graduating, I turned down being a scribe because I didn't want to be just limited to med school if I wanted to pursue some other type of public health/health policy route. But then, I kind of didn't know what to do and was pretty stagnant for awhile... I just started AmeriCorps this month in a public health position. Throughout college, I volunteered at the hospital with entrance... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Past PIP and effect on licensing and credentialing
A few months into my first hospitalist job post-residency, an adverse outcome patient case was reviewed. While the cause of the adverse outcome was multifactorial and it is possible that extra imaging/quicker specialist consultation may not have made a difference, I was queried. Admittedly, there were points I could have improved on, like better documentation to reflect that I was aware of everything going on. Based on this, the hospital ended up Proposing a voluntary PIP. I honestly was so... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Clinical Sobriety
Where are people at with assessing clinical sobriety these days? I'm an inpatient psychiatrist and see this documented in ED notes periodically. I'm aware of the Hack's intoxication index, though docs at my hospital don't seem to use it. Is there a formal checklist for clinical sobriety that is widely accepted, or are docs just winging it? I was prompted to ask this after reviewing a recent ED note which seemed to contradict itself on the topic. The note read: "the patient is clearly under... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Site Neutral Payments Axed
"Congress will not move forward with a controversial policy to equalize certain Medicare payments to hospitals and physicians’ offices in an upcoming government funding package, five lobbyists and sources following the talks told STAT. The delay is a win for hospitals, which have adamantly lobbied against the policy." (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Diversifying my Clinical Experience
Hello SDN, Most, if not all, of my clinical experience hours are paid as an EMT over summers. I was thinking for the upcoming summer, I would diversify my clinical experience to get a different perspective as either a medical assistant or hospital volunteer. I was just wondering how it would be perceived if I took a position as a hospital volunteer instead of being an EMT this upcoming summer, as obviously I would have less responsibility. The reason I want to do this would be to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Creighton Phoenix vs Frank H Netter Quinnipac
Creighton Phoenix Pros from socal so this is close to home I love the sun vibes of students and faculty are SO supportive and wholesome I like urban living + patient population so I would enjoy having a lot to do here Friday quizzes so weekends are conducive to relaxing associated hospitals all within close proximity Cons internal research does not seem strong BUT school is close to UofA and Mayo and many students are involved with faculty there (current...
