Leishmania vaccine development: A comprehensive review
Cell Immunol. 2024 Apr 23;399-400:104826. doi: 10.1016/j.cellimm.2024.104826. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTInfectious diseases like leishmaniasis, malaria, HIV, tuberculosis, leprosy and filariasis are responsible for an immense burden on public health systems. Among these, leishmaniasis is under the category I diseases as it is selected by WHO (World Health Organization) on the ground of diversity and complexity. High cost, resistance and toxic effects of Leishmania traditional drugs entail identification and development of therapeutic alternative. Since the natural infection elicits robust immunity, consistence efforts ...

Visceral Leishmaniasis Masquerading as Drug-Induced Pancytopenia in Lung Cancer Patients
Curr Oncol. 2024 Apr 17;31(4):2274-2277. doi: 10.3390/curroncol31040168.ABSTRACTMaintenance chemotherapy is a standard treatment in patients with non-progressive advance staged IV non-squamous non-small cell lung cancer after induction therapy. Here, we report the case of a 53-year-old man undergoing a maintenance monotherapy with pemetrexed who presented prolonged pancytopenia despite filgrastim injections. A bone marrow aspiration revealed a macrophage activation syndrome with Leishmania amastigotes. A Polymerase Chest Reaction testing confirmed the diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis. Treatment with liposomal amphoteric...

Biophysical Evidence for the Amyloid Formation of a Recombinant Rab2 Isoform of Leishmania donovani
CONCLUSION: To our knowledge, this is the first study to report in vitro amyloid-like behaviour of Rab proteins in L donovani. This study provides a novel opportunity to understand the complete biophysical characteristics of Rab2 protein of the lower eukaryote, L. donovani.PMID:38661034 | DOI:10.2174/0109298665299157240327084614 (Source: Protein and Peptide Letters)

Sampling is decisive to determination of < i > Leishmania (Viannia) < /i > species
ConclusionsThe type of clinical sample can directly influence the detection and identification ofLeishmania (Viannia) species. Here, we demonstrated that lancet scraping samples consistently allowed the identification of more leishmaniasis cases compared to filter paper imprints or biopsies. This procedure is inexpensive, painless, and easy to implement at the point of care and avoids the need for anesthesia, surgery, and hospitalization and therefore could be used in resource limited settings for both military and civilian populations. Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) Clinical Presentation, Laboratory Findings, Treatment Options and Outcome
CONCLUSION: VL should be included in the differential diagnosis of any child who presents with fever, splenomegaly, and anemia. Concerning the treatment strategy in this study, liposomal amphotericin B had more efficiency and shorter hospitalization duration.PMID:38654944 | PMC:PMC11033536 | DOI:10.18502/ijpa.v19i1.15190 (Source: Iranian Journal of Parasitology)
