Ablation for malignant liver tumor using high-intensity focused ultrasound and radio-frequency: A meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: The meta-analysis shows no significant difference in efficacy, long-term survival rates, or complication rates between HIFU and RF ablation for primary liver cancer, but more large-scale, high-quality randomized clinical trials are needed to prove their equivalence. Both therapy strategies seem promising, but additional information is needed to determine their respective merits.PMID:38517812 | DOI:10.3233/THC-230868 (Source: Technology and Health Care)

Waste analysis and energy use estimation during MR-HIFU treatment: first steps towards calculating total environmental impact
ConclusionsEnvironmental impact should ideally be analyzed for all (new) medical treatments. By assessing part of the CO2 emission and solid waste produced, we have taken the first steps towards analyzing the total environmental impact of the MR-HIFU treatment of uterine fibroids. These data can contribute to future studies comparing the results of MR-HIFU LCAs with LCAs of other uterine fibroid therapies.Critical relevance statementIn addition to (cost-)  effectiveness, the environmental impact of new treatments should be assessed. We took the first steps towards analyzing the total environmental impact of uterine fibroi...

High-intensity focused ultrasound with visually directed power adjustment for focal treatment of localized prostate cancer: systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionLimited evidence from eight observational studies demonstrated that visually directed HIFU for focal treatment of localized prostate cancer was associated with a relatively low risk of complications and acceptable cancer control over medium-term follow-up. Comparative, long-term safety and effectiveness results with visually directed focal HIFU are lacking. (Source: World Journal of Urology)

Ultrasound-guided high-intensity focused ultrasound ablation for uterine arteriovenous fistula: a case series
CONCLUSION: HIFU ablation appears to be an effective and safe treatment modality for UAVF. It provides a noninvasive approach with favorable clinical outcomes.PMID:38479404 | DOI:10.1080/02656736.2024.2325478 (Source: International Journal of Hyperthermia)

Recent advances of ultrasound-responsive nanosystems in tumor immunotherapy
Eur J Pharm Biopharm. 2024 Mar 11:114246. doi: 10.1016/j.ejpb.2024.114246. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTImmunotherapy has revolutionized cancer treatment by boosting the immune system and preventing disease escape mechanisms. Despite its potential, challenges like limited response rates and adverse immune effects impede its widespread clinical adoption. Ultrasound (US), known for its safety and effectiveness in tumor diagnosis and therapy, has been shown to significantly enhance immunotherapy when used with nanosystems. High-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can obliterate tumor cells and elicit immune reactions through...

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Cancer
CONCLUSION: Our systematic review and meta-analysis revealed lack of studies with active comparators comparing HIFU to standard of care (ORP, RARP, or RT) in primary treatment of localized low- and intermediate-risk prostate cancer. Open radical prostatectomy has favorable efficacy outcomes compared to RT, while RARP has beneficial functional outcomes compared to ORP, respectively.PMID:38451125 | DOI:10.5152/tud.2024.23123 (Source: Cancer Control)

Focal high-intensity focused ultrasound therapy for localized prostate cancer: An interim analysis of the multinational FASST study
CONCLUSIONS: This interim analysis of a multinational study on HIFU therapy for the management of low-to-intermediate-risk PCa reveals good functional outcomes, minimal adverse events and low incidence of TF over the short-term. Data on long-term outcomes, specifically as it relates to oncological outcomes, are awaited eagerly.PMID:38445798 | DOI:10.1111/eci.14192 (Source: Clinical Prostate Cancer)

Prediction of Ablation Rate for High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Therapy of Adenomyosis in MR Images Based on Multi-model Fusion
This study aimed to develop a model based on radiomics and deep learning features to predict the ablation rate in patients with adenomyosis undergoing high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) therapy. A total of 119 patients with adenomyosis who received HIFU therapy were retrospectively analyzed. Participants were included in the training and testing queues in a 7:3 ratio. Radiomics features were extracted from T2-weighted imaging (T2WI) images, and VGG-19 was used to extract advanced deep features. An ensemble model based on multi-model fusion for predicting the efficacy of HIFU in adenomyosis was proposed, which consist...
