Risk factors for unresectable pancreatic cancer following high ‐intensity focused ultrasound treatment
ConclusionHIFU can effectively relieve pain in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer. Post treatment VAS and change of peripheral CD4+ T cells are independent risk factors affecting the prognosis in patients with unresectable pancreatic cancer after HIFU treatment. (Source: Cancer Medicine)

Efficacy of HIFU for the treatment of benign thyroid nodules: a systematic review and meta-analysis
ConclusionsHIFU is an effective and safe treatment option for patients with benign thyroid nodules. However, the effects of HIFU on nodules of large sizes and with different properties require further investigation. Additional studies, particularly randomized controlled trials involving long-term follow-up, are warranted.Clinical relevance statementSurgical treatment for thyroid nodules often results in permanent visible scars and is associated with a risk of bleeding, nerve injury, and hypothyroidism. High-intensity focused ultrasound may be an alternative for patients with benign thyroid nodules.Key Points•The success ...

A Canadian center's experience on whole-gland salvage therapy for radio-recurrent prostate cancer with various modalities
This article chronicles the experience (cryoablation, n=187; HIFU, n=81) in a high-volume Canadian center and reviews the literature on other salvage ablative therapies. Whole-gland salvage ablation has yielded oncologic results comparable to those of salvage prostatectomy, with cancer-specific survival and metastatic-free survival of approximately 80%, and biochemical disease-free survival of 35%. Freedom from androgen deprivation therapy was 49% at 12 years. Improved ablative technologies and functional diagnostic imaging modalities have rendered focal salvage ablation feasible in selected patients. Preliminary oncologic...

Current status and future outlook of ultrasound treatment for prostate cancer
AbstractRadical prostatectomy and radiation therapy are the standard treatment options for localized prostate cancer (PC). However, radical prostatectomy may cause the deterioration of urinary and sexual function, and radiation-induced hemorrhagic cystitis and severe rectal bleeding are risk factors for fatal conditions in patients after radiation therapy. With the recent development of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for the localization of clinically significant PC (csPC) and treatment modalities, “focal therapy”, which cures csPC while preserving anatomical structures related to urinary and sexual functions, has be...

Dense speed-of-sound shift imaging for ultrasonic thermometry
Phys Med Biol. 2023 Sep 29. doi: 10.1088/1361-6560/acfec3. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDevelop a dense algorithm for calculating the speed-of-sound shift between consecutive acoustic acquisitions as a noninvasive means to evaluating temperature change during thermal ablation.
Methods: An algorithm for dense speed-of-sound shift imaging (DSI) was developed to simultaneously incorporate information from the entire field of view using a combination of dense optical flow and inverse problem regularization, thus speeding up the calculation and introducing spatial agreement between pixels natively. Thermal ablation mo...

Oncological and functional results of focal treatment of localized prostate cancer with HIFU
CONCLUSION: Our results are in agreement with those of the literature, seeming to indicate a lower morbidity of the focal treatment by HIFU compared to the radical treatments while offering an acceptable oncological control. Prospective randomized trials are ongoing.PMID:37770359 | DOI:10.1016/j.purol.2023.09.012 (Source: Progres en Urologie)
