Comparative analysis of organophosphorus versus carbamate pesticide poisoning: a case study

As its clinical manifestations closely resemble those of carbamate pesticide poisoning, the aim of this case study is to present a case of misdiagnosis, initially identifying carbofuran poisoning as organophosphate in a patient suspect of a heatstroke. We also present a case of intentional self-poisoning with organophosphate dichlorvos to underline the likelihood of pesticid...

Heat-Related Illnesses
There is a growing incidence of heat-related illnesses due to rising global temperatures. Heat-related illnesses range from mild to severe, with heat stroke being the most critical. The wet bulb global temperature index considers humidity and solar intensity; its use is recommended to estimate heat stress on an individual and mitigate risk. Efficient cooling methods, such as cold water immersion, are essential in severe cases. Prevention is through hydration, appropriate clothing, recognition of high risk medications, and awareness of environmental conditions. Recognizing heat-related illnesses early in the clinical course...

Cooling Modality Effectiveness and Mortality Associate[d] with Prehospital Care of Exertional Heat Stroke Casualties
The objective of the study was to determine the prehospital cooling rate associated with ice sheet use from a sample of 462 heat casualty cases in the logs of Fort Benning' s currently named Fort Moore emergency medical services (EMS) during a 5-year span. The rationale was to help identify cooling options for remote locations when resources may be limited or the exertional heat stroke (EHS) victim must be transferred to a site with more effective cooling options. Exploring the Potential of CarbonCool ® in Rapid Prehospital Cooling for Severe Heat Stroke
CONCLUSION: We present an innovative approach to prehospital care for patients with heat stroke through the use of CarbonCool®, highlighting its efficacy for rapid cooling and its potential impact on patient outcomes. However, further studies are warranted to fully confirm the efficacy of the system.PMID:38416877 | DOI:10.1080/10903127.2024.2323575 (Source: Prehospital Emergency Care)
