Pulmonary vascular phenotype identified in patients with GDF2 (BMP9) or BMP10 variants: an international multicentre study
Conclusions GDF2 and BMP10 pathogenic variants are rare among PAH patients, and occasionally associated with CHD. HHT cases among GDF2 carriers are limited according to the literature. BMP10 full phenotypic ramifications warrant further investigation. (Source: European Respiratory Journal)

Messenger RNA technology shows first promise against a rare and deadly disease
The innovative technology behind some of the most successful COVID-19 vaccines is showing signs of success in treating a rare but dangerous metabolic disease. Researchers report today in Nature that regular infusions of messenger RNA (mRNA) coding for a missing enzyme may have slashed the rate of life-threatening medical emergencies in a handful of people with propionic acidemia, a condition in which toxic compounds build up in the body and damage organs. The results from Moderna are the first published clinical data showing that mRNA, used in vaccines to deliver viral proteins that provoke an immune respon...

Incidence, management and prognosis of new-onset sarcoidosis post COVID-19 infection
CONCLUSIONS: Our result suggests there is a potential link between COVID-19 and new-onset sarcoidosis. The potential mechanism for this is through cytokine mediated immune modulation in COVID-19 infection. Obtaining a tissue sample remains key in confirming the diagnosis of sarcoidosis and this may be delayed during active COVID-19 infection.PMID:38567560 | DOI:10.36141/svdld.v41i1.15027 (Source: Sarcoidosis Vasculitis and Diffuse Lung Diseases)

Consideration for alpha-gal syndrome in two critically ill persons with group O blood who received group B plasma
CONCLUSION: Two patients with O-positive blood and no known allergies experience danaphyl axis after transfusion with group B FFP. The symptoms cannot definitively be imputed to an allergic transfusion reaction, but the presence of IgE against alpha-gal supports an association. Medicating patients with antihistamines and IV steroids pre-transfusion may prevent allergic reactions. Restricting group B plasma-containing products (plasma, platelets, cryoprecipitate) for patients who experience AGS-like symptoms may be considered.PMID:38566573 | DOI:10.1111/trf.17811 (Source: Transfusion)

Evaluation of cardiac arrhythmia in pediatric patients with Left Ventricular Assist Device (L-VAD)
CONCLUSIONS: In patients undergoing L-VAD implantation, rhythm disorders that could normally lead to hemodynamic instability are frequently encountered. In these rhythm disorders, medical therapy should be attempted before resorting to cardioversion or defibrillation, and subsequently, more aggressive treatment methods should be considered.PMID:38567583 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35724 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)
