Unknown safety and efficacy of alcohol hangover treatments puts consumers at risk
Addict Behav. 2021 Jun 27;122:107029. doi: 10.1016/j.addbeh.2021.107029. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIt is important that hangover products are both safe and effective. The aims of the current study were to evaluate (a) the ingredients of currently marketed hangover treatments, (b) whether companies make disease modification claims for these products, and (c) the extent and quality of any independent scientific evidence on their efficacy and safety. Of eighty-two hangover products identified, the most common ingredients were vitamin B, vitamin C, milk thistle extract (silymarin), dihydromyricetin (DHM), and N-acetyl L-cy...

Effect of Previous-Day Alcohol Ingestion on Muscle Function and Performance of Severe-Intensity Exercise
CONCLUSIONS: Previous-day alcohol consumption significantly reduces morning-after performance of severe-intensity exercise. Practitioners should educate their athletes, especially those whose events rely on anaerobic capacity and/or a rapid response of the aerobic pathways, of the adverse effect of previous-day alcohol consumption on performance.PMID:34225252 | DOI:10.1123/ijspp.2020-0790 (Source: International Journal of Sports Physiology and Performance)

Characteristics of Patients Reporting Presumed Problematic Drinking Behavior After Gastric Bypass: Exploring Long-Term Data From the BAROBS Study
ConclusionA subset of patients display drinking behaviors that may be consistent with postsurgical alcohol problems. Screening instruments like AUDIT may not be sufficiently specific to capture several risk behaviors occurring after bariatric surgery. (Source: Frontiers in Endocrinology)

The Prevalence of Binge Drinking and Alcohol-Related Consequences and their Relationship among Japanese College Students
Tohoku J Exp Med. 2021;254(1):41-47. doi: 10.1620/tjem.254.41.ABSTRACTBinge drinking is a common and risky behavior among college students. In Japan, however, research on the prevalence of binge drinking and alcohol-related consequences, and the relationship between them, is currently scant. The aim of this study is to examine the status of binge drinking and alcohol-related problems, and the relationship between them, among Japanese college students. We conducted a cross-sectional survey of college students who participated in a health seminar or lecture including alcohol-related contents from December 2018 to January 201...

Burnout … trauma … both? Identifying and addressing needs during COVID-19 through informatics.
In this brief article, the author notes that discussion of work/life integration have become increasingly com mon at her institution, as school-age children regularly make appearances in Zoom meetings, and team mem bers have to shift between dynamic roles in their work and family lives throughout the day. Advantages and disadvantages of disulfiram coadministered with popular addictive substances
Eur J Pharmacol. 2021 May 7:174143. doi: 10.1016/j.ejphar.2021.174143. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTDisulfiram (DSF) is a well-known anti-alcohol agent that inhibits aldehyde dehydrogenase and results in extreme 'hangover' symptoms when consumed with alcohol. This drug, however, has been suggested as useful in other forms of drug addiction due to its beneficial potential in both drug abuse reduction and withdrawal. However, among other drugs used in alcohol dependence, it carries the greatest risk of pharmacological interactions. Concomitant use of DSF and central nervous system stimulants usually leads to harmful, undesi...

ERR and dPECR Suggest a Link Between Neuroprotection and the Regulation of Ethanol Consumption Preference
Reconsumption of ethanol after withdrawal is a hallmark for relapse in recovering patients with alcohol use disorders. We show that the preference of Drosophila melanogaster to reconsume ethanol after abstinence shares mechanistic similarities to human behavior by feeding the antirelapse drug acamprosate to flies and reducing the ethanol consumption preference. The Drosophila cellular stress mutant hangover also reduced ethanol consumption preference. Together with the observation that an increasing number of candidate genes identified in a genome-wide association study on alcohol use disorders are involved in the regulati...
