Lack of effects of a “sobering‘ product, “Eezup!’, on the blood ethanol and congener alcohol concentration
The quest for “sobering” compounds to counteract the effects of alcohol and to alleviate hangover symptoms reaches far back into ancient times. While such a remedy was recommended placing a wreath of parsley on the head, more recent times have seen a popular rise in the use of commercially available “booze busting” products. In Germany, products with names like “Pekasin,” “Elektrovid,” “Contra,” “Stop,” “Promill-Ex,” “Mobiletten,” “Neukamm-Limonade,” “Party-Plus,” or “Break Down,” to name a few [1], each briefly caught the attention of the media, when they were la unched on the m...

Biomarkers of the alcohol hangover state: Ethyl glucuronide (EtG) and ethyl sulfate (EtS)
ConclusionsAlthough urine EtG and EtS concentration did not significantly correlate to estimated peak blood alcohol concentrations or the number of alcoholic drinks consumed, a significant correlation was found with urine ethanol concentration. However, urine EtG and EtS concentrations did not significantly correlate with overall hangover severity. (Source: Human Psychopharmacology: Clinical and Experimental)

Free radical production and antioxidant status in brain cortex non-synaptic mitochondria and synaptosomes at alcohol hangover onset.
Abstract Alcohol hangover (AH) is the pathophysiological state after a binge-like drinking. We have previously demonstrated that AH induced bioenergetics impairments in a total fresh mitochondrial fraction in brain cortex and cerebellum. The aim of this work was to determine free radical production and antioxidant systems in non-synaptic mitochondria and synaptosomes in control and hangover animals. Superoxide production was not modified in non-synaptic mitochondria while a 17.5% increase was observed in synaptosomes. A similar response was observed for cardiolipin content as no changes were evidenced in n...

Synthetic Cannabinoids: psychopharmacology, clinical aspects, and psy-chotic onset.
Abstract Synthetic Cannabinoids (SC) are the widest and most diffused class of Novel Psychoactive Substances. SC are chemically heterogeneous and structurally dissimilar from delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol, being full agonists of the endocannabinoid system receptors CB1 and CB2. Desired effects include euphoria, talkativeness, feelings of joy and laughter, relaxation. With respect to cannabis, SC intake may also be associated with quicker arise of the effects, shorter duration of action, and larger levels of hangover. SC are more psychoactive than cannabis: symptoms may include a wide range of clinically rel...
